A few more projects that I just completed and uploaded and are available for free. A second forest tile to go with my previous ones. Yes, I painted it and it makes it look more like a forest, but the design obviously has the shapes. www.thingiverse.com/thing:2411580Prairie path with connected tiles. Same disconnected tiles. www.thingiverse.com/thing:2402806

I have been gone for several months and experimenting with various software packages and posting things to thingiverse. As a result of some of my work being seen on thingiverse, I have people contacting me and offering to pay me to design things for them. One person asked if he could sell 3-D prints of my design on ebay. I let him do it for free with one design just to see what would happen. I have other sites contacting me to post my designs and even have an offer of setting up a website to sell my designs with them taking a percentage of the sales and the set up and the website are free. They will just send me a check. So with that note here is my latest 14 lava tiles with and without openlock. I am doing this because I find it enjoyable, not because of money. Only issue I see is not receiving credit for your work when someone takes it. My way of giving back to the community. Check it out for free download. Lava TilesIf I get positive responses I will post other design links with pictures.

I need to brag. I know it isn't becoming, but after less than two months I finally have something averaging over 200 downloads a month. That's pretty good for me with no advertising or a website or more than posting on this site about my stuff. I posted on thingiverse and started on Myminifactory. Intricate Columns
I should note these aren't all the columns in the set.

The CR-10 series is supposed to be quite good. It retails for around $400-$450. Cheers!

So I have come on a certain conundrum. I have quite a variety of things created and ready to post free on thingiverse, but as many know, there are individuals that create things and then post a single item and are selling. The problem I have is that I have created things that are close to what is being sold. You could say that they are better designed, but that isn't always the case. They are obviously distinguishable from what is selling out there. So should I be posting things that are pretty close to what is out there being sold or not. These are by certain favored individuals posting on this site? In some cases I have designed pieces 6 or 7 months before those selling similar things. I want people to make money on designs, but at the same time, I like showing and sharing my creativity and since I don't have a money purpose, it is showing off my abilities and boosting my ego. I spend quite a bit of time seeing what is available and not and then try to do something original in some cases. Take my portable grinding stone which was unique when I posted it, but has been copied since. Appreciate some thoughts on this. Am I being too cognizant of others work or not? My Work

Dont worry about it IMHO.
You know how many versions of skeleton minis I have? At least 4.
Skeletons like your door or any other creations will speak to a buyer more than another similar item.
Depends on the mood which ones I use.
The only thing I would worry about it having a similar item, dont price it too cheaply or the other designer may think you are undercutting their stuff for your gain.
That may be worse in some peoples eyes.

If you design and post first, nobody has any reason to fault you. It's not showing off or undermining anyone elso - it's sharing. And I don't think it is really discouraging anyone from purchasing another option. As erho said, people like variety!

Sounds like others are tweaking copies of your work, and then selling them... As long as that does not bother you, move on. If it floats your boat, sail on, and steer clear of obstacles in your path. Cheers!

From your description, I can only imagine that you are talking about me. As far as posting Thingiverse items, dissimilar is great, even similar is okay, it when items are copies or some or all of the original mesh was used that there may be trouble. If you have items that you designed from the ground up, post away. I haven't seen any indication that thingiverse is adversely affecting sale companies. In fact, I think it actually bolsters it. There are currently 25+ design companies specifically for gaming. Most specialize in fantasy (D&D). There is tons of cross over... dungeon tiles, tavern sets, wagons, buildings, etc. Variety is great, and it is what people want. Thingiverse is great place, but it is only half the printing world.
If you are having trouble with people selling direct copies of your work, you may want to change your license from CC to Non-commercial.

It isn't just you, but I have never taken designs from anyone else and modified them without specifically saying in Thingiverse that they are remixes and in your case I don't think I have ever remixed anything you have created. Since I have never sold anything despite being asked to sell designs and being approached by others to create designs for money, I don't think this is an issue. Oh and I purchased your first base set back when you did your first for sale of true tiles even though I think I could have designed them, because I wanted to support designers and I wanted to spend my time doing a few more creative things. Please don't take the "more creative" as an insult. I know you have released other designs that are beyond my limited artistic capabilities.

No offense taken. Just saying you shouldn't be worried about posting your own designs on thingiverse, even if someone else has created and/or sold something similar.
