Today I was in the middle of a print when I noticed that I would not have enough wire filament left on the spool to finish the print. The print was already 3 hours in and I didn't want to loose it, so I unwrapped what was left on the spool and grabbed a new spool of filament. I used a soldering iron to melt the two pieces together. A rim formed where the two wires melted together. I trimmed it smooth. I carefully wound the old wire on the new spool. The printer didn't know the difference. The great thing is there is no waste and no spool changing jamming.

It's from the Winterdale 2 kickstarter. The models are BIG. Way bigger than I would have thought. It is going to take a ton of plastic to print everything.
My next project on the docket is going to be to build a filament extruder.... I am determined to cut my plastic cost by nearly two thirds.

I'm not too concerned about it since most of those buildings will be a print once, use forever type of thing. I don't know what, if any of the castle pieces I will be printing anytime soon but the other buildings I will. The graveyard and Docks definitely. There is a lot of stuff in there.

Guessing you'll be printing a lot of the parts for this device

If my reading of the DIY extruder documents is correct, the hardest part is the barrel which was custom lathed. That may or may not be a problem. I suppose one could use a gun barrel as well, but that is fluted already, so maybe a simple rod is enough and the fluting does the grinding???
