curufin I ran into my first failure. I tried to print this unicorn.. www.thingiverse.com/thing:1235864So I loaded it into Makerbot Desktop and it showed it in 3 separate pieces. I tried printing it as is and this is what I got. So I am guessing that I need to be printing this as 3 separate prints? How do I split them up?

This gives me a million dollar idea: Unicorn Glue Factory!
Try printing the body upside-down. You will want to use a raft and supports. Try slowing the travel speed down to 80mm/s.
When I download it is came as 3 separate files: head, body, and base. You should just be able to load each file separately.

Hmm, mine came as a single file. I will check both thingiverse and shapeways and see if he has a different file.

I think I have settled on buying the 2 Dragonlock packs from Fat Dragon Games for $9.99 each. I know cardboard is cheaper and faster, but I really love the look of a dungeon fully laid out using Dwarven Forge tiles. I have a large set of Wyloch style tiles and a full case of 2.5D Next tiles so I have lots to work with while I start building up my set. I love all the free options out there but the biggest reason I like the Dragonlock packs is the clips that holds it all together. I was considering putting magnetic strips under my tiles and building a table with a metal top so I could easily set the tiles and not have them move around. The thing I hate the most about modular tiles is setting them up as the players explore but if I do it before hand then you have to find a good way to hide them. With the dragonlock clips I can build rooms or halls and have them off table and then just add them as they explore them. The other cool part is the working doors and secret doors. I think the $20 investment is worth it for me and I hope in the future they come out with a cavern set which I don't see anywhere else. All the other free tiles are 2x2 tiles also so I can mix and match if there is something I really need. www.fatdragongames.com/fdgfiles/3d-printer-models

Yes. The wire extruder is pretty much a fancy hot glue gun. The little pieces go in a heated hopper and it gets forced through a 1.75mm (or what ever size you need your wire to be) nozzle and cools. I suppose it is also not unlike the Play-dough fun factory... That is almost exactly how they work, Here is a link to the best/cheapest DIY i have found Deltaprinter, this one is a little more fancy and controlled but basically same process DIY-Filastruder. Of course you can purchase one for around 200$+ Overall i will start off buying filament but i will eventually be making on of these.

I'm tempted! I am going to order the printer today. From what I've seen here in this thread and example prints people have done online on thingiverse.. this printer has a relatively finer print-- yes?

skunkape So what do you think of the dragonlock tiles? The best part to me is the locking clips but really, that is the only thing that I can't get from the openforge tiles for free. In fact, the openforge tiles have a LOT more versatility in tiles. Are they worth the $20 it will cost for both packs? My other option is to print the openforge tiles and find another way to set them up before hand without having them on the table.

My other option is to print the openforge tiles and find another way to set them up before hand without having them on the table. Can you edit the openforge 3D file and add the locking clips? Btw, what do you think of the texture of the standard openforge tile? It seems a little off to me. Compare to dungeon forge .. I like dungeon forge texture much better. But this is just my opinion. I like the tile texture of dragonlock much better than openforge -- it's more like dwarven forge in texture. To me its more appealing, and looks like stuff would sit more level on them. My brother is a cnc programmer and he does lots of work with CAD/STL etc. Maybe I can learn from him how to make some tiles.. maybe mod the dragonlock with the openforge files.. make a hybrid.. If I can then I can give you them for free. I've used computers since 1981 and develop software, so I think I should be able to handle it.. I already know google sketchup at least.

Meph, did you see this open forge remix? link You should try printing two of them and see how well they clip together. If it works out, you could remix all the openforge tiles you want with that base. I may print a few off to play around with... maybe I can come up with an easy way to mod them.... Otherwise, the Fat Dragon DragonLock tile look great and for $20 that's still a lot of options. Just think how far the same $20 would go at dwarven forge, you might get two 2x2 tiles. And you know Fat Dragon will just be making more styles. I really like the Fat Dragons company, they always do a good job. 2 coppers and all that...

So this looks pretty promising, since I already know how to use Google Sketchup. There is an extension for Sketchup called "Sketchup STL". I installed that and imported an STL file I downloaded from Thingiverse: www.thingiverse.com/thing:189703I then imported it into Sketchup and here's a screenshot of it in Sketchup. JUst make any tweaks in sketchup and export as STL. Looks like I really have a reason to learn Sketchup inside out now! So I can make / modify any terrain/miniatures , car parts, household items, electronic project enclosures, and the list goes on and on! So glad SKetchup is robust, easy to use and free!

Hrmm, I tried to import an openforge tile and one of those mz mini's and both cause Google Sketchup to not respond (i.e. hang up).
EDIT: Okay I got one mini imported.. maybe I just didn't wait long enough on the succubus. I'll wait an hour and see.

you dont need to, making 3D models is a hard and really really long process. i tryed boxing, not really my style, still a very long process. i tryed vertices. same long process. seriously whatever you choose is gonna be a very long process.
so why bother, just take the things off the net. there are tons of stuff to take already.

Be careful to regularly check the bolts on your printer. Last night I was having some issues with the rafts under my items printing a little odd and not pulling off properly. I had to trim them with a razor to get them all off properly. I leveled my platter again but the same thing happened. This morning I noticed that one of the bolts that holds the back together had fallen off. I can tell you it was a PAIN in the butt to get that back in. Basically I had to hold the nut with a pair of tweezers and just barely squeeze it in there and hold it in place while reaching under and trying to thread the bolt in. I managed to get it but I can tell you there isn't much room to work. After that I checked all the rest and re-tightened them as well as leveled the platter again. We'll see how that works.
