While some could be said to be more inclined to do a thing, talent, in my experience, is just a matter of repetition.
My old art teacher once told me that Talent is something that comes naturally to you. Skill is what you develop over time from repeated application. She said that nothing irked her more than some one viewing her work and saying "You are very talented". She said she worked her butt off with years of art classes, private art tutors and a degree in art, with 14 years of teaching art classes her self to get to develop the skills she has now. Talent had nothing to do with it. Truth be told, I kind of miss her, she was a nice lady (And I finished her class back in the 1980s).

I love the Reaper paints. I still use some Citadel paints, and I've added Vallejo paints to my stash, but if I can find a Reaper MSP bottle in a color I like I buy it right away. That said, I'd recommend getting the basic colors set from any one of the miniature paint companies to start with. They usually come with a brush or two, and maybe a free miniature as well. You'll find which colors you use more, and which colors you wish you had. Pick up those extra colors next time you're at the game store or placing an order. Eventually you'll have more paint then you know what to do with, and most of it will be the stuff you use.
Oh, and I'd say brushes sold by those paint companies should be good enough to start with. (Maybe not the GW brushes. I've had nothing but poor quality brushes from them lately.) Maybe it's just me, but I can't get a clean line out of a $1 brush, but $1 brushes are great for dry-brushing, stippling and other techniques that will destroy your expensive brushes. You probably don't need to start with a $20 brush but at least look at the $4 ones.
And one more thing. Have at least two water cups for cleaning you brushes between colors. Use one for metalics and one for non-metalics. When you clean you brush with the metalic paint water the flecks of metal get mixed into the solid colors. This is how you end with the Glam-Rock Orcs of the Glitter-Dome.

I ended up ordering a whole slew of minis today for my frostgrave warbands, treasures, and random encounters. I have some D&D minis that I am also going to repaint for this. I took stock today of my craft paints as well as picked up a metallic gold, copper, and a few vibrant colors I wanted for my terrain. I have 4 reaper minis that have been kicking around for the last year waiting for me to paint them so I might give a couple a go with my craft paints and see. I think my plan is to just start buying my reaper paints as needed, rather than 108 of them at once. I'll update the ones I paint with the craft paints.

I ended up ordering a whole slew of minis today for my frostgrave warbands, treasures, and random encounters. Is it possible to list / link all of what you ordered? I am very interested as I am trying to build up a collection of monsters, warbands etc. I am going to pick up a Polar Bear Cub today at Michael's for $1.99 .. maybe $1 half off w/ coupon. I hope they have it in stock -- it's on their web site. The Polar Bear Cub seems like it will be just about the right size for a normal sized bear. I like the idea of it being polar, because it makes sense it might be in Frostgrave.

This one and a mini painting vi by girl painter have helped me a lot. Less so techniques but more on fundamental color ideas.

I am really impressed with the undead kit. Kinda upset I wasted the $7 on these giant skeletons after looking at that kit. What a great value. I think I'll get it, along with the soldiers kit. Love the treasure kit as well -- I'll grab that. I'll make my own spell cards since I have a color printer, index card stock, avery permanent glue, paper cutter and card sleeves. I really like how those toads are painted blue -- cute. Love the Tengu toad in the last link. So basically I am gonna buy everything you got but the spell cards I guess Thanks Hey, can you let me know what size the bases are after you get them? Are they 25mm, 28mm or 30mm? I use 30mm right now. I guess if they are too small I could rebase them all.

I will let you know. I don't know how long this is going to take to ship. I am kinda afraid. I start vacation in 2 week, the kids are off school and I have nothing going on. I can see myself spending a LOT of time playing this with my kids and painting minis =)

So I decided to try my hand at the Reaper Bones Hellhound that I had sitting here. My biggest concern was the flames which I think came out best. It's good enough for table quality.

Yeah Photobucket is having some serious issues this week. When I upload it has been hanging up when trying to upload just a few pics. After 20 minutes it times out and then I see it has uploaded the same pic 10 times. I deleted them and left only one of each but sometime today they were all purged because those no longer exist. I will fix it and upload them again.

If you can get it, a yellow or orange glaze or wash over the flames would be a good option to improve the look
