Watched DM Scotty's Stirge vid and here's my take. Built basically the same way, except my stands are toothpicks mounted on pennies with lots of hot glue. I also made two of the minis with three wings instead of the two. (maybe a queen? or one that is a bit tougher? meh we'll see) I played around with them a bit and they seem sturdy enough so far. I wasn't sure about using toothpicks as stands so I built one and dropped it a bunch of times and it didn't break so I made ten stirges. Here they are so far...... I will add some stones/sand to the base and come up with a paint scheme(s). I soooo needed Stirges........ Sorry for some of the wonky pics. I'll add more pics after they are based and painted up. Stay tuned.....

On the other hand, stirges are totally generic monsters that can be used in random encounters for low- to midlevel parties, and also as summoned monsters, which is probably the main use they would see in my game (I'd probably make the summoner a recurring villain so that my players really start to hate stirges and the guy who summons them *evil grin*). In short: I needed some excuses for making them and it looks like I just found them.

They look great! That warrior is as good as dead. I think that putting 3 or 4 stirges on a single stand might be a nice way to help represent swarms. Well done!

Well done! great idea! never even thought of putting several on one stand for a swarm lol! I will do this for sure! These are based on pennies, maybe I'll use slightly larger washers for the swarms. Thanks for the idea! Cheers.

i do not like the idea of them being too high either. so putting more then one on a stick is a great way to hide that tooth pick.
i should be doing these soon. not that i need them but if i ever do then they will come in handy. my only problem is finding something else to do the wings, i dont have those leaves you guys are using.

I put them up high so as not to interfere with the minis when clustered around plus they fly anyway. Also could have a psychological impact on the players if they have an insecurity complex. Having something above them. heh heh. For the swarm I was thinking of wire and have the stirges in a "spiralling upward" for a couple and a couple have the stirges "spiralling down" configuration. I'll see what I can come up with.

Stirges on top and scorpions down below? You are a hard DM Mr. Voodoo When we recently started playing again, one of my friends who had played before had never seen stirges. I couldn't believe that. We had some young ones playing as well, so they hadn't a clue what a stirge was. This bird like thing flying around, how hard could that be to kill? That is, until one of them landed on a player and started their blood sucking. Then things got freaky quiet for a second. I could see them all visualizing what was going on and none of them liked what they saw. I love stirges!

Basic stirge ecology...

Pally: I used cardstock to cut out four wings. Used superglue to glue the wings to te woodbead/hot glue body. See if I can take pics to show how I did it.

The cool ting about stirges is that when they attack, they are in touch with the players: Your barbarian buddy with two-handed sword isn't really a great help getting rid of that bloodsucker, and neither is the dwarven warrior with his battleaxe. These critters can harrass even a midlevel party! And if you feel that they disatch the stirges too easily, have a second wave attack. After all, there's always some latecomers, maybe it's the main swarm that followed followed the pheromones of the scouts - so what your players thought was the main encounter was just the prelude... The more I think about them, the more I like stirges. *evil DM grin*

Voodoo, your Stirges are fantastic.
There's one other use for Stirges, even at high levels. They carry diseases. Sure, if the players realize they're loosing hit points every night they can bust out the magic healing. But till they do... They'll never know that low level monster caused so much trouble. Also, any escort duty gets a lot harder when the wagons come across a hive.

Then when you get bored of using stirges black bomb the mini and use them as large mutated mosquitoes and play "mosquito buzzing in your ear" sounds while they are in battle. I have a surround sound system and the buzzing would be all around the players. sometimes to the side, in front or from the back hahaha This would annoy the crap out of any player haha. Sometime DM's are eeeviLL. I should get to painting up the bases today. I'll post more pics of the finished stirges soon. Cheers!
