So awhile back I was playing around with some minis, taking their old paint jobs off using acetone. I was using cotton balls to hold the acetone and when I was done with them, I washed the cotton balls in water and realized they were coming out in these really crazy shapes. So I started playing around with them and they had potential as cave formations such as flow stones and small pools for accumulated water. I gave them a white glue wash and let them sit for about 2 days. They came out looking like this. Now with a gray wash and a few minis to give scale. I think there is potential in this and I do have a bag of cotton balls. This idea could also be used for ice and snow features as well. Perhaps even magma flows.

I was watching one of Dodobot's vids about finding good stuff at the thrift stores. I work for the post office and I have 5 different routes (I take over for the regular on their days off), and on one of my routes there is a Salvation Army that I deliver to. I went in there one day and saw some really cool Egyptian statues about 8 to 10 inches tall. Too tall for minis but perfect for statuary, and since I have a party going through a pyramid with an Egyptian styled decor, I thought these would be perfect (there were two of what looks like Horus and two other different statues). I went in on my day off and checked them out. They were heavy, definitely not plastic and (sadly) they were 10 dollars each. So since I was in there, I took a look around and found some cool material to buy. Bamboo placement mats. Or at least I think they are. But what I do know is that they are a bunch of bamboo sticks tied together by string. Here is how long they are, note the 1 inch grid mat underneath for scale. That's a lot of bamboo sticks. And each one for .99, the smaller one came in a bag of "bric-brac" so I also have two measuring cups and two whisks...go figure. Ed. Note: The purse is not mine, but my wife's, although that is my flip flop in the upper right, and probably the bills are mine as well. Thanks, Dodobot for getting me into that store and looking around (normally I would gravitate towards the books and nowhere else).

Nice! Btw, that bamboo thing is actually used to roll sushi.

Ok, that's an even odder thing to find at a Salvation Army

So the other night I had this old remote that I decided I was going to deconstruct. Hoping I could get a few things out of it. Before I did this, I made sure this wasn't attached to anything that I was using at the time. I had to do a visual check but there isn't anything at our house that is made by Samsung, so I was good to go. The seam along the side was easy to pop and the whole thing opened up a lot easier than I thought it would. That's basically it. I expected more for some reason, but a circuit board and a rubber key pad is really all you need. The flip side of that circuit board. Quite a nice design actually. Close up of the circuit board, that green resistor (?) would make a nice potion. The coils that attached to the batteries. This screams steampunk or SF to me. This is the lens at the end of the remote. It has a really nice dark purple hue to it. Another coil that connected the batteries. That's one piece. Not sure what could be done with this, but it's rather cool. Probably make it easier to think if it were primed. This is the facing plate. Maybe a dremel saw in the right place could make this a nice floor trap (?).

that looks like a universal remote though. so it could go with anything really.
as for using electronic stuff... i'd be wary, just like food containers... some components can be dangereous.

Yes, that's true, DND. I was taking apart some component and something funky was coming out of it. I really like to use those resistors for potions. Anything that can't be used by just snipping off the leads isn't really worth the risk.

Been putting this off for awhile now, mainly since I've been lazy and photobucket makes me wait for their stupid ads to roll through before my pics will load (even though they say the ads won't affect the uploads- Liars!- but that's another story). I use PostImage.org - it's free and reliable. *shrug* Great finds though!

When I max out on that site, I will have to think about other sites. PostImage.org will be something I will look into.

The other day I was on my route and one of my customers was having a garage sale. There were quite a few people there looking around and one guy was loading up some stuff into his truck when I passed him by. I happened to look down and saw some type of craft thingy on the ground. When I came back around, about an hour later, that thingy was still in the street, apparently someone was loading some stuff and this fell out. I figured after an hour and nobody around, it was fair game. This is what I found. I thought this was a basket full of chicks and was only looking at it for the basket. Turns out, to my pleasant surprise that there was not only a cool wooden basket, but three green leafy plant stems, about 5 eggs and some moss on the bottom that can be salvaged. About the only thing not salvageable was the hot glue keeping everything together. My niece's little one is dino obsessed so I am making him some terrain (I've been working on palm trees and wooden fences to keep his dinos corralled). Those eggs will now allow me to make a dino's egg nest.

So I went to the Dollar Store the other night. Found some cool figures. They have these set of two dinos or two reptiles for a dollar each. They glow in the dark, but they were the right size for some cool adventure. Oddly enough, these dinos are about the right size for Sir Looksaround. I also found these creepy crawly creatures. They are a tad too big and they lie rather flat. If I could use them I would need to work on repositioning their legs and make them stronger. I might be able to do something with that mantis, and the centipede just needs a paint job. But below is the reason I grabbed this package. With a little work we have a bona fide carrion crawler.

While I was at the Dollar Tree grabbing those figures. I also grabbed this. The Christmas poinsetta craft. I needed something for palm leaves on a project and these leaves looked palm tree-like. They even come with a clip which easily comes off. I am also making some wooden rail posts and needed some matchsticks glued together. These clips came in handy keeping the two match sticks held together while the glue dried. So now I had to deal with the glitter but found that it was lightly glued onto the leaves and everything else. I was able to strip away the glitter and I was left with this. Those leaves are easily snipped off and make excellent palm leaves. Plus, I came away with all the glitter. This was after the first poinsetta got stripped. After three poinsettas, I had even more glitter. Palm trees unpainted but in action. Look how good those poinsettas work. I amazed myself last night.

They make screwdrivers specifically meant to go with these types of screws, but here is also a link to someone asking how to take them out without a special tool to do so. Hope it helps!

Thanks, Erasmus, that does help. Or at least it gets me to thinking about what I could use.
