My daughter (8-years) started in some sort of chess lessons in school. Part of the fun is to build a chess board and figures.
The painted the board, but the figures are something harder, so we decided to simply print 2D-counters and glue it to cardstock disc's. But the Crafted in me weep.
I search for some printable 3D-Chess figures with some slot-system. It should form a + when seen from above. Do some of you know about a source for such figures?

Quite honestly, there's another solution as well. Go to the dollar store and you can probably find a chess set for a dollar. Then look up marble painting techniques and you can jazz them up rather easily there to fit your chess board. You might also want to base them, and the craft store wooden discs would be great there, and you could even label the underside of them with the symbols for the pieces.

depends... i wouldn'T buy the chess sets if its for a school projects that "requires" you to "MAKE" the set. if they dont require you to d that and you can simply paint over an old set, then go for it. but if they require you to create the set... then i wouldn't try that.
we used to create fake 3D back in the days of yore by putting two 2D images one over the other in a plus sign. that way whatever side you look at you see the images. but it also gives the impression of the mini turning with you as you move.
aside from that... sculpting may seem like the only real options.
as for the base, go for washers... add the much needed weight even more if its for a chess set.

Ah, peg people...peg chess. This would be a nice option. I went with printed 2D and cardstock, but the next holidays are near, maybe we try to craft peg chess. :-)
