Need some suggestions on how to simulate this scene.
The players must descend down a 20 by 20 air shaft once the get past the fan blades. Every 15 feet, there are connection passage that feed air throughout the facility. These shafts are not large enough for the players to access, but large enough for the monsters to attack. They will descend the shaft via metal ladder built into the shaft for maintenance.
How do I simulate each "section" of the shaft as genestealers will be leaping from the adjoining horizontal shafts to attack them? I was considering making several square sections to simulate a section of the shaft as the individual players climb down - each player would get there own section (i.e. section 1-10)and and they would move through each section until they hit the bottom.
Any other suggestions?

I would look at making as many of the 'Pit with Fake Perspective' that DMScotty posted on YouTube as you need to simulate each area that the PCs are liable to have to fight in. Run a ladder down one wall (or possibly alternate walls if you feel like making life even harder for the heroes!) and have them hold on to that whilst fighting one-handed against the enemy. Suitably chunky hits could require skill/ability checks to retain their hold on ladder rungs slick with the viscous goo that passes for alien blood... And then there's the sound of chitinous claws scrabbling for purchase on the rungs in the darkness below them... Ooooh. Scary!

hmmm.... One way I might do this is without tiles....just track the players descent and have them fighting "theatre-of-the-mind" style....the other way is the way I think you were alluding to above.... The biggest limitations are the players need to hang onto the ladders, whereas the genestealers are likely to be able to sink their talons into the walls and fight with their extra arms....

You could make the the vertical shaft like a regular tile and lay the figs down to simulate that they are climbing down. The genestealers could just stand up as I assume it would be easy for them to climb like spiders.

what about making each deeper tiles darker? also could you rig staircase arrangement with each tile being a little bit darker and having a little latter going from one to the next. it would still be open play, and you would get the feeling of descending. The only imagination would be that you're going straight down rather than a step pattern.

Thanks for the suggestions, they were quite helpful. I have quite a few tiles to craft for this adventure. I had best get started.

Take a sheet of cardboard bend it in a semi circle or a large quaker oats can and cut in half lengthwise. This is the shaft. Take Dixie cups for the intersecting sewer pipes. When you paint it use magnetic wall paint. Which you can pick up from Lowes or Depot. It is not terribly expensive. Use a few coats. They have a few colors. Put magnets on the bottom of the wall crawling minis. The sell sheets of the magnet stickies. Make a ladder with tongue depressors as rungs separate them wide enough so the PC's minis can stand on them.

Thats pretty clever gnomerule. I may consider that answer. I like the idea of magnitizing the genestealers so theylook like they are clinging to the wall.
