You could have a room with a mirror. After the players settle down and start searching, the one person who looks into the mirror will see themselves but also a flask, scroll, gold, whatever right next to them. When they look where the treasure should be, it's not there. They can only see it in the mirror. Reaching into the mirror will gain them the treasure. You could do this a few times but place the treasure in harder spots around the room, so they have to figure out how to get at it. Now that they are used to this, show them a nice fist sized gem on a table, but as they are attempting to get it, have a monster (possibly something they cannot handle) appear in the doorway inside the mirror. You could have some audible illusions as well, so when it screams/growls/vocalizes, the players hear it behind them. Maybe it smashes a shelf in the mirror, but the party hears it in the room. So they have to decide if this is really in the mirror or is it in the room.
Normally, I am not too sadistic, so I tend to let them have a good scare (teaches them to be cautious). But if they are being jack wagons, then that monster could be very real. I wonder what the party would do if they saw a cockatrice running around the room inside the mirror?

This is actually a really cool trick. Totally combining this with my plans to make an occulus themed antagonist for a D&D game.
I totally AM sadistic...

Lol...just acknowledging the facts. I once had a lazy player who didn't want to make up a character backstory, so he asked to have amnesia.
I said "Sure, as long as I get to make your backstory instead."
He regretted that decision later...

i remember two things about mirrors that i found interesting...
a hall with two mirrors one in front of the others. making a kind of infinite reflection thing. anybody passing in between would get shot down by a confusion spell. simple and effective.
another one was, a cursed mirror. the mirror has a number of hidden cells. anyone looking into the mirror would be taken into one of the cells thats free. if none was free, one of the cell usually the longest used cell would be freed back. breaking the mirror would set everything free.
another one i got from MTG. the mirror takes anyones soul, and then shatter the body like it was made of glass.
never used the last but the other two were loads of fun !
