I've honestly never played a tabletop RPG before in my life, but lately I've found myself strangely compelled to collect painted 25mm pewter figurines, and I think it's time to start looking at the rest of it. I don't really know where it will lead.
I've been getting into a few of the major youtube channels with variations of this fantastic 2.5d system, and I love what I have seen. The problem is that I'm low on artistic talent and probably unwilling to budget the time to do it 'right.' That doesn't mean I won't do it, I just have to work within my personal limitations. I'm still waiting on some foreign supplies, but the short of it is that I'm looking at a setup relating to whiteboard with strongly magnetic walls. Whiteboard mainly because it's cheap and receptive to magnets, more than for it's traditional whiteboardery. (though having drawing options is nice too.)
I've found myself some decent printable tiles, and have some commercial ones around too. I'm hoping that they really start to pop a bit with some magnetic 2.5d love. Has anybody here tried a similar concept, and how did it turn out?

Welcome! A couple people have tried the magnetic wall thing. I think it turned out pretty good (I'd have to check the threads). With these crafts, artistic talent is almost irrelevant. There are so many tutorials with step by step instructions, it makes it very easy with very few tools. If you have the itch....you will succeed. So pour a cup of coffee (or crack a beer) and watch some vids and ask hundreds of questions. You found the right place!

Printable modular tile sets are the way to go, since you can simply glue them to magnetic backing material.

With these crafts, artistic talent is almost irrelevant. There are so many tutorials with step by step instructions, it makes it very easy with very few tools. Yeah, the detail on the instructions really makes me think that I could do a few of those. The flower pot huts and orc tents seem both interesting and well within my skill level. Heck, even the purple worm didn't seem *that* bad. Hot glue and wet toilet paper--just amazing stuff. Printable modular tile sets are the way to go, since you can simply glue them to magnetic backing material. Or even using printable magnet sheets, but what I'm leaning more toward now is just using the walls to do it instead, and keeping the flooring as layers of standard paper. For example, a layer of construction paper grass with a small house tile on it, all held together by the house walls and a few magnetic trees/rocks. I've picked up some 3/8" and 1/2" square doweling and textured spraypaint for the basic walls, but I am still waiting on my shipment of neo magnets. I think that part should turn out fine, as long as my mini-whiteboards are receptive enough to the magnets. One thing I'm not so sure of is my magnetic cavern wall idea. I ordered some black rope and earring posts/clutches to attach to the magnets. That might not work out, but if it fails I can always turn the posts into spiked traps of some kind.

Well, unfortunately the mini-whiteboards I picked up were not really receptive enough to the neo magnets. What I picked up looked like squares of the rolled whiteboard material glued to two layers of cardboard with a plastic frame hiding that fact.
Looks like heavier steel whiteboards for me--or possibly small steel plates. Initial look says that steel plates are not especially economical, but do allow terrain expansion in all directions.

I have three $20 whiteboards I picked up at MaulWart (roughly 22"x35" usable) they have an aluminium frame with plastic corners which have holes for screwing to a wall and beauty caps to cover them. They are corrugated cardboard with a painted steel sheet glued over the top. They are deconstructable, you could print whatever large area map you want and either spray glue or double sided tape your map down, or treat the entire board to a texture paint and hide neo magnets in the bases of whatever you wish. The steel isn't all that thick, but you could take sample magnets to the store and try out the whiteboard before you take it home. I have a variety of magnets on mine holding everything from s few sheets of paper to entire notepads. Remember, with thin thickness steel sheets it takes surface area to get a good hold, you'll need to jump up to 1/8" plate if you want to stick something heavy to it.
