Started to paint my first miniature. Well actually I've tried painting minis before but that's my real, genuine, sincere entry into mini painting. So I figure it's time for having a thread dedicated to outfoxing shaky hands, squinting eyes and runny colors. I'll probably post step by step reports, as usual. The goal is to show off my stuff share the lessons I learned during the painting, as usual.

I recently stumbled over a hilarious BDSM pig on ebay. I rarely buy individual miniatures because most are too expensive, plus shipping costs... But that one was just too good to pass on: I figured its a good first model to paint because there are only few different colors and no blending or similar advanced techniques involved. Hotglued to a bottlecap for better handling. It took me about 10 seconds to see how important it is to have a good grip on the mini without having to actually touch the mini itself. Never skip this step! I didn't basepaint it and started right away with the black parts. After a night of drying, I filled in the skin-colored areas. Lesson learned: Even with a size 0 brush its very hard to paint cleanly. [update] 3 hrs later Silver studs Dark pink Lash and handcuffs, eyes (oh gods, these details are tiny!) and teeth (not sure what to add here; simply layering them with white doesn't seem to be enough...). Then matte varnish over everything. The pink spot on the belly was an accident that looked good, so I left it. Finished, more or less. That was easy enough to be encouraged to continue, but challenging enough to give me agood feel for what's ahead the learning curve. Loved it!

if the size 0 brush isn't tiny enough for you. go for a toothpick. it works great. still requires skills to make use of it. but it is making more tiny details.
overall great mini, seriously painting isn't as hard as it seems. the type of thing that once you get into it, you figure stuff out very fast. Love that mini man.

Just stumbled over a already finished kickstarter project for miniature holders & grips. what really caught my eye was the metal bow/bracket that helps to stabilize the hand holding the brush and reduces trembling. I think the idea is pure genious. Maybe this is old news and done for years, but it's the first time I actually came across that bow/bracket. When I'm back in crafting business and start painting minis again (which may still take a few months, sadly), I'll try to craft such a thing myself. If in the meantime someone else gets it done, please post how it went! /description

thats looks great.
sidenote rereading this thread... for those wondering about the tiny brush or the toothpick thing... took me a while to understand but even with 0 brush. its a good thing to glob off the excess paint before trying to paint. meaning that when i put pain on my 0 brush, it seems to glob on it. so i just wipe it back onto the bottle keeping only the necessary on the brush.

Another two minis I had saved away in some 'miniatures to to' subfolder and then promptly forgotten. I might have shared them here in the past (didn't check), but re-share them now so that I remind myself to make something similar, soon-ish. This might become some kind of blighted spellmarker for a flying monster themed with corruption, or if made completely out of plant stuff, a cool fly spellmarker for a druid. You can also go the other direction and make it entirely out of rusted metal scraps, for a more steampunk-ish version. Crumpled aluminum foil for the inner sphere, zip ties for the metal bands, a few cool-looking plastic parts or miniature bitz (W40K maybe) for additional decoration. Hotglue and even more bits for the trail. This is one of my favourite flying bikes I ever saw. So much potential here! A toilet paper roll as a base, mechanical parts or organic stuff like tentacles, plus hotglue texture and/or bark-textured modelling paste for 'flesh' here and there. Shouldn't be that hard.

Shouldn't be that hard? Sounds like a challenge..... So, get at it! I don't do sci-fi, but, I am going to start looking for parts. A toilet paper roll will need to be cut down. But a glue stick tube will be closer to the right size or a lip balm tube, some card stock for fins. A couple different size pieces of wire, aluminum foil maybe for an impeller. So many possibilities. Waiting to see what someone makes. P.S. Did you ever give the BDSM pig a dark wash or the "dip"?

You've got a point, Sam - I made a (rather embarrassing) mistake with the size of the whole thing. With the right size in mind, I need to re-shuffle the rough plan I had in mind. *goes looking for lip balm tubes*

Not sure if the end resul will look decent, but a least the built is quick & easy. I used a strong cardstock roll because it is easier to cut and I have more of this stuff that lipstick rolls, or other tubes. I glued one cutoff on he upper end, a few pre-made tenacles on the sides and front, and textured he whole thing with hotglue. With the small metal piece on the belly of the beast I can use my magnetic fly stands. Based completely in skin color. I hope that it won' be too boring that way, but flesh texture was quick t make, and the corresponding two-color scheme (primed with skin color and washed with purple) is one of easiest color schemes ever. [edit] washed, with the color still drippingly wet. Notes to future self: 1) It friggin ALWAYS pays to wait for the colors to dry before going on with the next layer! 2) Remember to prime with thin colors. Thick layers of color will clog up fine textures. You know, the ones that took the longest to make...

I went more mechanical with mine. Wrapped card stock around a AA battery for body. Exhaust is small wire nut. Handle bars are cocktail picks. Circular trim on sides is two buttons stacked. Fins are card stock. Bead for 'console'. Cocktail stir sticks for pipes. Working on Hero Clix figure for pilot. Cut him off base, heated and spread legs, taped him to AA battery to set. Hope he fits. P.S. I removed the AA battery from body after hot glue set.

P.S. Did you ever give the BDSM pig a dark wash or the "dip"? No, I didn't. Unfortunately I seemed to have lost it in one of the moving boxes. At least it hasn't surfaced so far...

Finished painting. I could add a laer of acrylic high gloss varnish to give it a wet sheen, but it looks cool as is, so I'll probably leave it that way. I'm not totally happy with the appearance of the tentacles, both texture-wise and the colors, bu that's a minor point. I had used tentacles that weren't perfect because this was a test piece *, and it turned out getgw - good enough to game with. Which is great, especially for a test piece. * One lesson I had to learn several times: When making prototypes, you don't have to use rare or perfect ingredients because it is probably a waste of material. Always remember that the goal is not to come up with a perfect piece but to learn as much as possible about ways to make it. ...enough rambling, here's the finished piece **. I already glued together and hotglue-textured a second piece. This time I'll try out a metallic color scheme, and add some mechanical bitz. * I don't get why so many crafters routinely use the term 'finished product' when presenting the end result, which clearly isn't a probably just a habit and it caught my eye ear because english isn't my native language. Whatever...

Personally I would have given it a purple wash to not make it look like blood. Still looks pretty badass.

'nother version this time painted in the tried and tested 'rusted metal' color scheme: Based in black, then painted with metallic black Drybrushed with Leadbelcher, Chainmail, Macharius Solar Orange. Then washed with Nuln Oil. The strips on the sides are zip ties. I decided not to rust them to give the whole thing at least one small bit of contrast, as the whole rest is painted in the same way. Only after the very last brush stroke I realized that I had completely forgotte to add the handle bar and some foot stands...

"ROUS's?... I don't believe they really exist." "Rahhhrrr!!!" had to look that one up, realized that I remember almost nothing of the movie and added it to the classics to watch asapissimo list.
