i think it depends on what material the dinos are made of, and more specifically if you can file or sand it at all.
if not youll want to make sure to use something that air dries but stays soft long enough to finish the sculpting and avoid having to work it after it dries.
green stuff maybe?

yeah but i suspect the plastic is soft. if it is it will not respond well to filing and sanding. so then you won't be able to get rid of excess filler material without messing up the original plastic.
i recommend you do a test to see how the plastic responds to filing and sanding. if it is hard enough that you can do that and get a smooth finish that would make things much easier.
if not you need something that can be cleaned up before hardening.
if so you could make your own paste with white glue and a fine powder like talk powder or baking flour or something like that.

It is hard plastic. The white glue and powder might be good. I know that should at least hold craft paint

I might try some flexible modeling paste for the seam.

I'll need to take some more pics.... I posted on facebook about having a birthday party to go to tonight (holding off on my casting experiment for a few days). I stripped the paint off the bugs, have them primed with some spray paint. I might do one or two more tried with the dino stuff to get more paint off. I forgot to bring my caulk with me but might use the white glue and powder that someone suggested. I did get a bunch of the HeroClix stripped, plus I picked up a bunch more. Some people swear by priming them other say don't bother.... not sure what I will do there. DERP... yeah got a bag of zombies that are a bit shorter than normal minis but thinking of painting a few up. 100 of them in the bag, even being smaller sized they would still work really good for minions

The seams came out decent with some talc and white glue stirred into a paste.

The spiders paint up well. P1000749 by kitchen_wolf, on Flickr I don't see any reason to strip the paint - it really won't make a difference on these. They're made from steel dies with very deep detail to help keep the mold life longer.

Like i said they were cheap enough that if i mess one up i'm only out 50 cents. I find your logic to be impeccable. Then again...I support anything that endorses my cheap-skate...er thrifty...yes, I like that word...my "THRIFTY" hobby style. =D

Need to look for those.
I got something like 50 or 100 spiders (one pack glow in the dark) at the dollar tree.... scale wise they would be between hand and head size.
Forgot them at home so going by my lack luster old fart memory.

I also found these small painted ping pong balls that are supposed to be eyes. So I bought a bunch, and I'm making a beholder mini with them

Found these at my local dollar tree Yeah I bought a bunch of the gargoyles last year. They can either be painted up as Gargoyles or Demons/Devils. Looks like your Dollar Tree had a wider selection than mine did last year.

I was at the Dollar Tree last night and saw these figures and that tree as well. I had already found the stuff I was looking for and had to make another stop at Walmart or I would have scooped up a couple bags. They also have these glow in the dark reptiles and dinos which are about the right size. I shall call that a recon mission

I bought five bags of those bugs myself. The spiders look good, but I was really after the ants. I wanted ten of the Ants to use as mounts for KoW Goblin Fleabag riders.
