My daughter is home for spring break and she asked me to take her to local drug store to buy some nail polish. I noticed that some of the new colors are amazing iridescent and metallic colors that are more dynamic than paints for miniatures. The color I bought looks almost like a beetle carapace - golden green. I painted it on a barely primed Reaper figure and the results are amazing. I recommend stopping by your local store that sells a variety of nail polish colors - for $4 you can get a really cool color that would be hard to replicate in standard paints. Album

those fish look great! miniGirl has done amazing things with nail polish and other nail-art related stuff in the past. A pity she stopped...

It works for bases, but nail polish is a pain to deal with if there's a mistake made, or if you want to remove it for a different paint job.
It also smells horrible...

I think for painting a base nail polish is okay but I think on a mini itself it could chip off very easily. I have quite a lot of experience from painting my nails and it chips off fast and easy there. I never tried it on a miniature or a base before though. Personally I just apply a glossy acrylic varnish if needed. But I understand why you would want to use nailpolish. There are a lot of really cool colours available ;-) i have tried that water/nailpolish technique on my nails before and it is extremely messy. Not something I like ;-)

I recently picked up a couple of packs of bugs from the Dollar Store, which contains beetles (which is the sole reason I bought them!). The funky, pearlescent (florescent?) colors available in nail polishes, sounds perfect for the beetles! A full-strength coating of Pledge Floor Shine should protect them well enough. I was really struggling with how to get proper beetle shell colors for them... Problem solved!
I bought a package of black, plastic ants, a number of years ago (Giant Ants -- Eeewww! Scary monsters! Extremely dangerous in large numbers...). Until now, I thought I would just leave them unpainted, and base them. I may have to do some shopping for an appropriate nail polish color theme for them. Again, a full-strength coating of Pledge Floor Shine should suffice to seal and protect the nail polish painting. I am getting excited about this now, as I would love to do a one-off mini's battle between a Village of some kind of Human/Demi-Human races battling an invasion by a Giant Ant Colony... Cheers!

I used clear nail polish once to do a swamp board. Note to self...when dealing with that stuff remember to ventilate the room. LOLOLOL
