My take on the 2.5D Next System [Update 4-5]

I was pretty busy painting minis lately but there was still some time for crafting next to everything else that needs to be done in daily life So I thought I would share with you!

You all seemed to really like my bovine furs I made and in the meantime I have tried out a new type of fabric and made some bear furs (or whatever, at least less bovine;))



I also wanted to make some tents for my PC's. I let my friends chose the colour of the tents for their characters to make it all a bit more personal. Just don't question the pink one Someone jokingly asked for a pink tent with glitter. He probably wanted to see if I would actually make one and of course I did. We don't play too serious and usually with a lot of jokes and humour. So our party's wizard is actually intending to use the pink one nicknamed "the love tent" now because he thought it was hilarious. I also made some tree using toilet paper rolls, hot glue and some cheap plastic plants from Ikea that I took apart. And as you see I painted the mats green on the backside. I'm not sure yet how to put the grid on there nicely, so it kind of blends in a bit and isn't just an obviously painted on. We still use the grid since we're still all complete beginners. But we might change that in the future though



I also made some stairs and some kind of pit I can put in the dungeon wherever I need them:





I'm currently running a slightly modified "Keep on the Shadowfell" (D&D 4E) for my group. (some of you are probably familiar with that adventure). And I decided to make some specific pieces for that. The first ones I did was a floor tile with an evil looking magic circle on there. For that I simply painted a piece of cardboard. The other piece I have made so far is the Shadow Rift Portal. I cut the shape out of styrofoam and coated that with modeling paste. When that was dry I just pained it. I'm probably going to make something shadowy looking for the inside of the portal. It looks kind of bare like this.

There are some other things I still want to make so there are more updates coming

Yeah I guess it kind of looks like a stargate cut in half. Didn't even notice until you mentioned it. And I also really like the pink tent. It's always a guaranteed laugh when I bring it out or just mention it.

Love every bit and bauble! V-e-e-e-ry nice work. I would suggest browning the edges of the furs, however, with a brown Sharpie, maybe? The tents' textures are fantastic! How did you achieve that? The pink "Love Tent" is a scream! [If you are not having fun and laughs, what is the point?...]

I agree with Kevin:  the pit is extremely well done.  Love how you did the vanishing perspective, with it growing darker as you decend...  Fantastic rendition.  The stairs, the arc, and magic circle, are all inspiring.  Thank you for the encouragement.  Cheers!

For the tents I just followed a video tutorial from Scotty but for the rest I can make a detailed tutorial if you wish. I just have to take some pictures first of the different steps. I've neen planning on making more trees anyway. Or would a detailled description of how I made them be good enough?

Of course I am willing to share every detail about how I made all the stuff. A tutorial for the trees is definitely coming up as soon as I have the pictures ready!

on your tents...Did you use real material to cover it?

No I used wet kitchen roll paper with white glue and put it over the cardboard that I previously textured with some hot glue. I pretty much did it exactly how DMScotty showed it in his video here

Thank you! I was actually thinking about using fabric but I decided I would try the paper method first.

Last friday I got to use my stuff I made for the 2.5D Next system for the first time and everyone was extremely excited about it. We played a 12 hour marathon session and it really added a lot to the game. My players suddenly had ideas they previously didn't really have and used doors as weapons or tables and barrells to barr doors and so on. It was a really great session and the fun we had a big reward for all the work I had with crafting. I wanted to take a lot of pictures from the session to show you but I ended up taking just one. We were just so absoerbed with playing I suddenly completely forgot about taking pictures. But anyway here is the one picture I made from my stuff in action. You can see the door lying around on the floor. Our dwarf fighter tore it out of it's angles and threw it at two Hogoblin minions instantly defeating them. Also you can see the barrells the Pc's used to barr one of the doors. I think it's really cool that the little props cause a lot of new ideas to happen ^^

That's the beauty of using 3D (or 2.5D) props instead of 3D maps or Theatre of the Mind battles!

All of your stuff looks great! The fur sleeping mats are nice; I'll be stealing that!

It's surprising how much this enhances the game, too. The players' imaginations get a real boost when there are "Actual Things" that they can move around.

You reminded me that I need to make some chairs, too! I only have tables.

many people are visual people. thats the problem with theather of the mind. its that people are not all audio capable. they hear it but its not giving them any idea whatsoever. thats why once you go visual you dont go back. because every people are visual. but mixing theater of the mind and visuals is still a great thing.

glad your players enjoyed it, glad the experience felt great, thats the whole point of it all. doing all that stuff only to get boring results would of crumbled the whole idea. so im glad they liked. though i must say, i have yet to hear people say it sucks. everyone who saw my dungeons all said the same stuff... oh wow visuals, cool ! so im not surprised that your game was a blast.
