Any ideas on how to make a magic carpet mini that can hold 2 medium mini figs? It'd be awesome if it could "float".
Hmmmm

i got an idea and it would be based on my actual carpet miniature.
basically, i just took a small rectangle of paper towel, folded it in 2 or 3 for bigger size then dipped it into watered down glue. to give it some shape i'd use small metal tips and just holding in place. or you could mold something the white glue wouldn't hold to. then once everything was hard enough... i'd simply hot glue another small metal thing under it to serve as the "making it fly" pedestal.
not sure that could hold figurines, you'd have to reinforce the pedestal. but i think this is still the easiest way to make a carpet. at least thats how i did mines.

Hmm, I think a small piece of whiteboard metal wrapped in the paper towel might look good.

Howdy, It'd be awesome if it could "float". How about a variation of DMG's pressure plates? maybe three springs but low enough and towards the center so you can't really see them but the carpet could "boing" back and forth a little like it's hovering? I like... to dream, Kev!

I made one by dipping a piece of plasticard (fake credit cards they send you in the mail) into hot water and bending it into shape. I then covered it on both sides with a big-weave cloth and frayed the ends.

I'm not familiar with Big-Weave cloth? Is that just a term for fabric with large discernible stitching?
I like the plastic card idea.

Yes, sorry. Just any type of cloth that has a very obvious weave to it, so it looks like a rug.

Back in the 60's and 70's, gamers used empty toothpaste tubes to fashion flags for their mini's: cut to size and shape, paint the flag design, then flex the metal tube into shape. The same could be done for the flying carpet: use the metal tube material for the foundation for the carpet (can be bent into the desired shape), then apply a piece of coarsely woven fabric to the upper surface; paint as needed/desired. I would suggest using a stiff piece of solid wire, bent into a C-shape, glued to the base of the carpet on one end, and a somewhat large base on the other end, large enough to support the weight of two figures 'riding' the carpet, above. The base could even be made into a U-shape, to help it 'fly' over other figures. Cheers!

In fact, I think it's one of the easiest ways to get a flying carpet. It was also the second thing I had in mind (the first was using fabric instead of paper, but also with whiteglue). I have it on my to-do list...

I came up with an alternate method a while back when I waas running an Al-Qadim game. You'll want to hit the local fabric store and buy about a foot of 42mm or wider Jacquard fabric ribbon ( www.mjtrim.com/jacquards/42mm-imported-metallic-floral-jacquard). Cut two equal lengths at about 2 inches long. Cut a small piece of thin plastic just about a quarter inch thinner than your ribbons on all sides. If you want to get fancy, you can run the plastic under boiling water and ripple it a bit (I usually don't). Hot glue a ribbon piece to each side, so that they overlap the plastic and the edges match up. If you want to swing out and get fancy, you can use an x-acto knife to fray the edges at front and back. Instant magic carpet!

I've made one before for an ogre from the Ogre Kingdoms line from Warhammer Fantasy. Back when I was playing you could mount tyrants on a flying carpet. I made one for him. THe carpet was plastic card about the thickness of a credit card. Erasmas' idea of the fake credit cards is good for size. I used candles to heat the plastic and bend it into shape. I than used clear flying stems from the game to raise it off its base. You could just use wood dowels or find clear rods or something like this. I also put magnets into the carpet and into the tyrants feet so it could e taken off and put on a normal base too. The end pieces are just green stuff modeled and glued on. You could easily use beads as well. I'm totally in love with the design, especially the tiny thingies hanging from the edges. The magnets are also a wonderful idea. I really need to build one of these things. Exalt Sir!

Thanks for bringing this up again - I had already forgotten about it, and I while re-reading, I just realized that I had totally overlooked the magnetising aspect. Great idea!

oh for any worried about weight, that ogre is a metal mini not a plastic one. It is perfectly supported as it is

Not sure how I missed this thread, but I would start with a fake credit card or 2" by 3" piece of plastic card, and lay a sheet magnet over it. Sandwhich it between two layers of fabric, apply some bling and paint it.
To make it look like it is flying, make a 2" x 3" base, and use a soda bottle cap in the center to support it, that way it looks like it's floating but is low enough to the ground you can't see how
