Good find! The explosion with all the bodies flying away is great.

He is using a fluorescent bulb and has heat issues. I think you could get a similar result with bright white led light. You could also get it to work with a battery and self contain it rather than linking it to a power cord.

Neat, but I would only use it on a static diorama. For games, RPG or mini's, the blast is short-lived. I would be putting it out there, turning it on, then removing it the next game turn. It is gorgeous for a static diorama, though! For that, I would use LED's as a light source, but I would also look into putting a cooling fan in place, as even LED's generate heat, over time, and that 'smoke cloud' is very good insulation for keeping all heat inside of it. Cheers!

Yeah, I agree. I did, however, grab these twinkling leds last Christmas. They come on a short strand (5 and 10 lights). Borrowing a bit from that technique could produce an interestin elemental or demon or flame shield. I'll have to play around.

I absolutely love the aesthetics of the explosion, they're just gorgeous (as far as explosions can be gorgeous...)! My crafting fingers are itching to make one of these. However I agree with sgtslag - instant effects like explosions, fireballs and lightnings might be spectacular, but crafting that stuff isn't worth it because in a battle, you'd basically put them on for less than one round and take them away too soon to be of much use. So at best, they're nice to look at for a very short time - nd at worst, they'll topple some other elements on the battlemap... If we can come up for something a little more permanent on the map than explosions or fireballs, I'd be the first to craft one (illuminated with LEDs instead of something connected to a cord). - Flaming sphere is a lowlevel spell with a duration of several rounds, but my players barely use it. Also, it's much smaller than these huge things. - A colossal fire elemental? Now that's more realistic, but how often do you fight these? - ...let's brainstorm!

Yeah, that is just about the best explosion I have seen for crafting. I also what to figure out something to use that for....it's just too good to pass up! I wouldn't us a CLF bulb either. I'm thinking blue LED strip with 5-10 LEDs, it will generate next to no heat. Great find!

In one of the mongoose publishing web mags from a while back (I believe it was back when theirs was split, and this was in the minis one) there were some interesting instructions for making nuclear detonations.
Take a piece of decently heavy plywood cut in a circle the diameter of the base you want for the mushroom cloud (You really do want the heavier wood for this, I tried cardboard and it doesn't like to stand correctly) and about a foot long dowel wide enough that you can take a screw through the plywood and into the center of it. Attach them at the center.
Next you need at least one of the flat foam disks available at most places crafting sections such as those walmart has, and a thing of expanding foam sealant that a lot of hardware stores have. Attach the disk to the top of the dowel. You can use a nail to cut a partial hole in the disk to insert the dowel with enough glue to ensure a bond as well as keeping it from breaking the rest of the way through. If you want to strengthen the thing a whole lot more. Use a drywall screw and run it into the top of the dowel until you just the flat is visible then take wire and work it outwards and glue it to the disk that way to prevent issues if someone presses down to hard.
Then you take your expanding foam and start on the underside of the disk around the connection point to the dowel and work your way down, use more the further down you get. Try to have it somewhat even in thickness, but the bubbly look is actually rather good here for the appearance. Then do something similar outwards from the dowel at the top with a thicker ring around the outer edge and a slightly thicker than its surroundings along the edge of the base (Normally it works well to keep it sat on parchment or the like so that you don't have the edge of the wood showing) and enough on top to give it the correct A-Bomb blast shape.
Once you've finished, let it harden for as long as the type says (Longer is probably better here) and then use a large brush and give it a primer/base coat in white. Once that coat is done, you want a bright yellow along the post and underside as well as the middle section of the top. Then work through orange to red spreading from the center out, but with a bit more mixing between them to give the appearance of fire.
Then a somewhat heavy drybrush of black to the entire thing that is followed (while still wet) by one of a ash grey along the top to the edge of the ring (more grey to the outer edges) and a slight amount at the base.
The end result can be terrifying for players, especially if you can sneak it in without them noticing it until you break it out and plop it down.

I recently played in a zombie game where there were continually burning fires that blocked movement. These were made with a flickering LED tea light and fiberfill over the lights. It looks good and is fairly effective. You can make it look more realistic by partially painting the fiberfill black or dark grey to look like oily smoke.

Starcraft reference. but blizzard has their ways of using older reference by making their own. so it just might be dune2 reference remade in starcraft.
