Has anyone tried to make a mat like the one created in this video? I think it would be great for the 2.5D next method of doing outside stuff, and probably caves too. Any info would be great.

I was also hoping to ask about water features in 2.5D next in general. How would you add a river to a scene, for example?

For a river an old translucent shower curtain might work.

If you use the right caulk for it, it works right. The Acrylic caulk is what you need and there are a few things you need to have prepared. If you're going to make multiples, buy a piece of heavy plywood a good foot larger in each dimension over what you want and get some good clamps. Get your cloth larger than you want in the end, large enough to drape over the edges of the board. Stretch the cloth out and iron it over the board before clamping it and you'll have a far better end result. Get your paint and flocking (Honestly, with this kind of project, go with the railroad flocking options, it sticks well and it stays rather flat. Scotty's flock is good for some things, but not this kind of thing) ready before you start and in your last layers of caulk, mix the paint in and also add a good layer of the flock. You can even embed rocks or similar things into it such as plasticard cut up for stonework and similar. If you want/need a grid or similar thing for whatever you want the mat for (or use it for part time) you can easily impress it in and the end result looks extremely good. The end results are good looking and work extremely well for long term setups. They're also comparatively low in work for the results you get and can easily look professionally done.
