I think your tiles look great! Your lava is beautiful and the rocks look great! I'll be using forms like you have for a ruins setting. I love the way the lend themselves so nicely to our craft. But if you feel like you need to do a bit more on your rocks, then, I'd suggest using a natural sponge to dab on some texture with a highlight color.

Thx, I saw that post before but could not remember where. This is helpful.
As I can understand, the rock texture should be just rock and with the lava it will do the job.
I will try something today on the crossing section I showed. We'll see.

Here are my suggestions for what you have: Firstly, it looks like you have a really good rock color. It looks volcanic in the image. That's an important first part and I think you got that. Secondly: Magma is brightest in the recess, and cools at the surface. I'm including a wikipedia image for reference at the end. I would transition the color from orange to the deep orange-red, and start getting the rock color transitioning into the rock. The coolest parts are rock color, so the highlight areas should be darker rather than lighter. The other thing, which makes the Volcanic Planet images look "hot" is that the magma is a light source, so there is a secondary orange light cast off from the brightest parts of the lava. After getting the rock transition colors in place and cooling oranges, Lightly drybrushing some orange or thin orange paint on the adjacent surfaces that would be hit by this secondary light, your lava will look like it is a light source rather than just an orange pool of water. Also, just as another example, a lava pool that I did for a craftwar. Disclaimer: My lighting and camera sucked, but the principle is still there. (camera and lighting have a light white/blue haze over the image, so the colors really don't look accurate in the picture.) My magma is a much cooler temperature magma. Be sure to post whatever your finished product is, and let us know how it worked!

Here is a quick update! I could not keep working on what I was doing as I was eager to do my magma tiles. Seriously, I really love how it turned out! Thanks a lot ashrothedm! What I added in a slight dry brush of yellow over the lava, then dry brush orange, maroon and then mixed the yellow with the maroon to dry brush over the red parts to add a bit of an orange color. After all that I dry brushed everything (even the lava) with black. As for my next tiles (the crossing with 3 rocks), I think I will try to paint yellow, then orange, then dark orange and than add the black instead of painting the lighting in the end. Soon... www.flickr.com/photos/maestriaproductions/14999784262/in/set-72157646703941272www.flickr.com/photos/maestriaproductions/14997077861/in/set-72157646703941272/www.flickr.com/photos/maestriaproductions/14813506580/in/set-72157646703941272/Top view www.flickr.com/photos/maestriaproductions/14813502030/in/set-72157646703941272/Close-up of the rock. The reddish color that I washed in the beginning can be seen a little, which is a nice effect imo. www.flickr.com/photos/maestriaproductions/14999790422/in/set-72157646703941272/A close-up of the lava flow and the lighting on the rock. I love it. www.flickr.com/photos/maestriaproductions/14813628757/in/set-72157646703941272/As always, further tips/critics are welcome. If I want to enhance my crafting techniques, I need to listen to the pros. I would also love to hear DMScotty, DMG and AJ on this one!

Btw, the strange top of the middle rock will not be a problem as it will be the start of a wooden bridge. The ugliness of this part will be hidden from view.

I like how you used the heavy paper packing material on this.
You mentioned using maroon... Be careful with that, as it can dull things down almost into a gray, depending on the brand of paint used.
Also, you may want to make a scrap piece and try various brush-on acrylic clear coats. When doing normal paintings, they can REALLY bring out the vibrancy of the paints, keeping them looking as they do when wet, rather than that typical dull dried acrylic look.

Good job! That really made it come alive. I can almost feel the heat! Can you post a pic of a test layout so we can see how it all goes together?
Keep us updated!

Holy crap that came out well! That is a really nice improvement in my opinion. The cast off light is subtle and the whole thing looks like it would be hot.
I can't stress enough how important I think that color selection is, and you really have some nice color in that piece.

Hi Betthewing, I am not sure what are bursh-on acrylic clear coats? Like vernish? Pretty new about all that is crafting here, so I am still learning about the terms, type of paints, painting techniques, etc.

I wouldn't go high gloss on lava... look for matte or possibly satin. Should be like 3 bucks.

As for what you asked dungeonmistress, the layout should be ready soon. It is half random caves and half fortress. As soon as I have some time, I'll try to post it in general crafting.
