Hello, my name is WackyAnne, and I am a gaming, miniatures, & papercraft addict.
I began my addiction in my tweens (before that word even existed).
My god-brother, occasionally stuck with me on weekends when our families would hang out, eventually took me under his wing, and DM'd a few one-on-one sessions for me.
Including the awesomeness that is Ravenloft.
For some reason or another, beyond that, I had no other experience tabletop gaming (beyond the occasional board game) until recently. Sure, I'd had lots of fun playing early adventure and RPG-type games on the computer, eventually moving into early and offbeat MMORPGs. I played every game Sierra put out until '95 or so, especially the King's Quest, Space Quest, and my personal favourite the Quest for Glory series, and then Ultima Online, Neverwinter Nights, and a revolutionary MMORPG called The Saga of Ryzom...
Last New Year's (2013), my husband's best friend and I were chatting, and we shared an interest into getting back to the tabletop, the face-to-face, the great D&D. Since he had more, and more recent, experience, he was going to be our DM. We bought some books for him (including buying a digital book or two that my husband proceeded to print off on our home computer - ouch!), but the months went by, and he didn't seem to put much effort towards it, plus it was a little tough scheduling our young kids. Then I stumbled across Pathfinder, saw it as a more viable alternative in some ways (particularly if I could co-DM to relieve some of the pressure). I played once at Free RPG Day 2013, a couple of more times a couple of weeks later at a mini-con, a character building session in October 2013, had a partially-successful attempt at a home game this past New Year's Eve, a couple times more several months later, and then for the last month my parched desert has turned into a flowering jungle of gaming goodness, finally landing both regular games at my FLGS AND a bi-weekly home game!
While I limped from one play opportunity to another, gradually learning the game, not yet confident in my ability to run one, I ran across the realm of accessories, that weren't even on my radar back when I played D&D. I discovered Dwarven Forge's Kickstarter, but the upfront investment, and the doubling of costs for shipping, thwarted my temptation. Fortunately at the same time there was Fat Dragon Games' Kickstarter campaign, which met my needs and interests just as well, at a much lesser cost. Joining the Fat Dragon forum led me to the Cardboard Warriors forum, and I've been happily ensconced there for more than a year, admiring, collecting, building, and even creating gaming papercraft of my own. I've certainly exceeded the money I would have spent on Dwarven Forge, (and the storage issues I thought it would bring up), but I've also (digitally) met some of the friendliest people ever, and have great artwork, and great props, for tabletop play. While so far only a few paper minis have seen the light at the organized play I've participated in, I hope to soon change that, particularly when I restart the home game.
I had watched a few of the DM's Craft videos last year, but crafting my own stuff hadn't quite clicked. It wasn't until dungeonmistress reminded me of it about a month ago that I took another look, and have since been lurking here and there, and admiring what you all have been posting. With two boys, aged 4 and 8, at home all summer, I may not have much time to make stuff, unless it's something they can also be a part of. We'll try something out soon...
Oh, and the miniatures addiction? Well, I've always loved tiny things, building worlds for everything from the old Lego people's hands to marbles to Smurfs to action figures to Barbies, and had a particular fascination for dollhouse miniatures. My dad and I made many pieces for a dollhouse that never was, so I've lots of practice at small scale crafting, even if it's at 1/12 instead of 1/60 scale.
Anyway, this is me officially unlurking. You can blame dungeonmistress if you want
*waves at wildagreenbough too*
P.S. I love beholders. Like, a lot. Like, too much. Like, my players should be glad I plan on running Pathfinder or they'd be bumping into them around every corner!
