Hi all! I am starting to craft with cardboard using the DMScotty and DMG videos, which we just discovered. I am trying to keep costs to a minimum, or even less, and the crafting tips are fantastic. I am also trying to figure out all the rules from using various free downloads -- and struggling with the fact that there are so many versions of rules. I have decided to keep things super, super simple for this starting time and so mostly just use a d20 roll for the majority of situations - anything over 10 being a success. I am also trying to write my own scenarios or adapt parts of other free downloads, so as to keep the content suitable for family.
I am loving reading through the posts here, and seeing the great finished pieces.

Welcome to the forum, I think you will find any questions you post on specific or more general topics will be very swiftly answered by some of the most experienced and generous folks around. Its something we pride ourselves on around here. Sounds like you already grasped a good philosophy... just keep it as complicated as you need it to be.

Can I recommend two simple and FREE systems? Microlite 20 is free, roll a d20 over based, and dirt simple. And free. donjon.bin.sh/m20/Microlite20.pdfAlso, take a look at Basic Fantasy. It is free and plays almost exactly like the old Basic/Expert sets from back in the day. Plus there are more free adventures on their site than you will ever need. www.basicfantasy.org/Download either of these, make a few pregeneratated characters, and you are ready to run.

Thanks - that is great help and seems good for the family-appropriate group gaming style that we had in mind for this. That way everyone who wants to can have a copy of the rules. Here's my 2 cents: Whip up some pregens and have people choose. New gamers (especially kids) want to get right to the good stuff. Don't obsess too much about having a perfect cardboard dungeon. If you have a few minis (or make cardboard tokens) and a a paper to draw a map as they go (or even some small toys or boxes for walls, cottages, etc...) Don't worry about it being perfect. Don't worry about having a perfect adventure either. Have a few monsters, a few chances for them to talk to people, and have them go rescue someone the goblins kidnapped from town. If you made a combat encounter too tough, just reduce the difficulty on the fly or have the bad guys decide to retreat. And you can make nice tokens using token tool at: www.rptools.net/index.php?page=tokentoolIt's free. I prefer square ones as they are easy to cut out. And no need for minis. Plus you can make one of Lee Majors with a mustache. I've never run a session where someone didn't snatch up that token immediately.

You didnt mention how old your geandson is, but dont think kids cant handle rules. I play savage worlds with my six year old daughter, she cant read yet but basic math like 1d8+2 is no problem. Because she have seen how I play with her older brother she knows exactly if I play baby RPG or real RPG. :-)
She likes to craft, to.

...dont think kids cant handle rules. I play ... with my six year old daughter, she cant read yet but... :-) She likes to craft, to. The youngest in the group is in middle school (junior high) and turns 13 in a few months, so this is easily handleable. He also, is crafting ... IN FACT ...<drumroll> he is the one who found the DMscraft videos on Youtube and showed me how I could make the tiles and furniture. Right now he is working on a lava tile -- and it looks fantastic! I think we will probably do our first real dungeon run in about two weeks, after everyone gets back from their vacations. So, keeping it simple, and keeping my fingers crossed that I don't bore everyone to death, or confuse them. And making a trap ... :-) I figure I can get in at least one man-eating trap before they scatter on me.

Welcome. As you can see, you will always get helpful advice in droves... and often times more than you know what to do with! (which is a good thing, I think) Also, what great quality family bonding time...both the crafting and the gaming. Kudos!
