Being able to hand this to a player for them to solve as the miniatures on the table do battle sounds like fun to me. Hope this doesn't break any rules but I did a short tutorial write up on another forum. Anyone who watches DM Scotty should recognize how I did the texture scrolls.larpcraft.com/index.php?threads/in-game-mystic-puzzle.8074/

Cool idea. I'd like to see it mixed up the way it would be when you hand it to a player. Could you post some pics of that?

This is how I would hand it off. This is the configuration that would blow away anyone who is versed in solving rubiks cubes. It looks like its an impossible move but it is an illusion caused by so many of the sides being similar. Evil I know

That is super-sweet! I like puzzles with props.
I might make one that's a magic item. Maybe different configurations with different effects?
I'll be checking dollar stores for the cheapo "puzzle cube."

as long as its not doing like in that web series called LARP where the paladin has to tank the boss for like 30 minutes jus because the guy with the rubik cube took that much time to do one single side.

Ever since the Dr. Who "Key to Time" episodes, I've been using puzzle props with my players. My good ole standby is a Soma cube that was a gift from my grandparents about 35 years ago. Still have it. Keep up the good work!

If you gave me a rubics cube puzzle to solve, my party would all die before I could solve it.... Lol
I think the idea of having the cube is great though....
What if you had different levels of success.... Ie. Solve the red side, and you get a fire damage buff, solve the blue side, you get a cold damage reduction, solve any 2 sides and you get something? Or really make it mysterious, solve one side, except for the 4 middle/side cubes, and you get something. Or on one side have a row of 3 red, a row of 3 blue, and a row of 3 green... You could obviously sprinkle clues throughout your campaign indicating some hard to figure out combos.
I think the idea of having it solved untraditional (like a certain pattern on one side) is a great twist. It allows players to actually solve the thing without having to solve the thing. And would throw a curve ball, because they originally would think they know what they need to do, when in reality, solving it traditionally isn't even the goal.
My 2¢

Don't ask me how, though... I'm not a wizard or anything. You may not be a wizard or anything....but did you stay at a Holiday Inn Express last night? It just might make all the difference. =D
