It is both a puzzle and a trap, because it can kill you

That's why you make traps that don't affect reflex saves. I once created a particularly trap-findey rogue. He dipped into sorcerer to get a ferret familiar, lightning reflexes...the whole 9 yards. Foiled by a trap where a key was at the bottom of a tub (raised off the ground) beneath a frozen pool of water. Because the tub was cast iron (as old bath tubs used to be), I just lit a fire beneath it to unfreeze the water... Which turned out to be a frozen ooze. Shoulda seen that one coming. Anyway, no reflex save...the battle with thr ooze was the resolution.

hence why i said isn'T all traps puzzles for that very reasons.
i once created a random dungeon and one of my player told the rogue to stop searching and just run thru with his reflex... god i hated that player, he was ruining everything because he used to be a DM and could never do anything else then meta game his way. thats where i took the reflex save run from.

This is why most traps that utilize a ranged attack against AC don't come with rules for a reflex save. I once (and continually do so now because I players find him to be some kind of legend at our table) ran a rogue who specialized not necessarily in dodging traps, but rather building them. Yeah, he focused on stuff he had readily available, and it almost always involved the fighter's crossbow or the barbarians ax. The only reflex save anyone got against it was to avoid tripping the trap altogether, unless they were being particularly careless. In your example, just running through not caring and relying on the reflex save would have been considered "careless".

At least your rogue took a chance and you had a chance, albeit a small one. I'm, according to my players, a trap whore. That was the reason that they started going through a dungeon using nothing but take 20's on their search and buffing the rogue till he shone like the sun in a detect magic. So i got rid of most of the selfsustained traps and punished them with monster operated traps, most of them ranged or aoe. They should have known i would punish them
