Getting back into d & d to introduce to my kids. Have not played since the 80's. My old figurines lost to the yard sales of long ago. Would like to buy a bulk pack of just common heroes and monster figurines of not the best quality but descent quality for painting and the bulk of the game play on the cheap. Of course I don't mind paying more for special heroes, villains, and monster bosses, these type sets are easy to find. Just need to get a bulk of figures to get us started. After scanning the net, could not really find what I wanted, I am rather out of touch, maybe these sets don't exist. Does anyone have any ideas to help me out? Looking to buy 25 to 35 figures for 50 to 80 dollars. Thanks!!!

You could check some local hobby/specialty shops to see if any have their own in store made bulk mini collections from singles and stragglers.
If you don't have much luck finding some bulk bags, or cheap priced singles locally, I always recommend browsing Auggies, Cool Stuff Inc, Miniature Market and Troll and Toad for cheap singles.
Some will get as low as 50 cents per mini and you can kind of pick and choose what you want, too, and you could probably pick up quite a few figures this way with that kind of budget.
There is also some eBay options where guys will be selling bulk bags of D&D/RPG minis too that you may be able to find.

You can get a ton of 28 mm (D&D miniature/Pathfinder battles scale) miniatures in the 3 D&D Boardgames Wrath of Ashardalon, Castle Ravenloft, and Legend of Drizzt. Amazon sells them for 35-40 dollars with free shipping. Right now they are all out of stock and only available from 3rd party sellers though but they usually get more every month. If you can scrape together a little more, you might be able to find a reaper bones kickstarter out there. The "vampire" level comes with 240+ minis. I got mine on eBay for $192.50. I'll be set for a good little while.

My standard advice to people in your situation is:
1. Check out eBay with the following searches: - RPG Miniature lots - Mage Knight lots - D&D Miniature lots 2. Do a google search for "Caesar Miniatures" Or even "25mm miniatures". Caesar Miniatures have sets of undead, orcs, goblins, dwarves, elves, heroes, knights, etc. at pennies per miniature. 3. Check out your local gaming store for used or consignment miniatures. 4. Go to your local Michaels, Hobby Lobby or other craft store and buy a box of "Sculpey Polymer Clay" or even better, buy some 'Super Sculpey". You can make hundreds of miniatures from one box of poly clay. When I first decided that I was going to have miniatures for my campaigns I bought some Sculpey, some cheap paint and in a few days I had dozens, probably well over a hundred miniatures mostly of the goblin, orc, kobold or undead variety. Sure they weren't commercial quality, but they not only worked fine, my players loved them. 5. Go to a local toy store, like a US Toy (or go online) and buy a whole bunch of toy miniature animals, you can get dinosaurs, jungle animals, spiders, bats, birds, insects, lizards, snakes, whatever you want usually for a quarter or less per miniature. You can use them as companions or outdoor encounters, or you can cut them up and create magical beasts like owlbears, pegasi, unicorns, manticores, whatever you can come up with. sacrifice some humanoid minis to make centaurs, driders, minotaurs, etc.
If you pursue #5 I recommend that you get some epoxy putty. "Green Stuff" (Kneadatite) is the most common but it's expensive. I use Apoxie Sculpt. Using that you can really polish your frankensteined creatures and/or learn to sculpt your own from scratch.

The painting of the Reaper kickstarter sets of the various backers on the forum... I think we will need a special support group to get us through it all.

Joe wants to role play a dwarf? Time to paint one of the dwarves! The party confronts the evil necromancer and his horde of undead? Time to paint the necro and the skeletons/zombies!

Or... you could go to Cardboard Warriors and get armies of paper mini's! There are many great artists there who donate there art to the Monthly Hoard and some who do all their work for free for the love of the hobby and the game (Dryw the Harper's Imperfect People, for example, and Permes soldiers). Even those that do have a cost don't cost much, plus you can print out as many as you want! Here is a link to a quick and dirty battle scene I just set up to demonstrate the playability of paper mini's.Represented there are mini's and scenery by several different artists. Sorry, I don't have any homemade tiles, yet, to set this up on. Give me some time and I'll get there. No kidding, literally give me some time! I need all I can get! Hope you like what you see!

If you want quick, cheap, and dirty till you can pony up some $$ for minis go with the paper minis. You can also roll out some flour based clay, find some fantasy faces on line and make some tokens. Use a milk jug lid or soda bottle lid to get them uniform in size.
Might not be as good as minis but they do in a pinch and you can't beat the price since you most likely have everything you need on hand.

Dark Alliance and Light Alliance are also really cheap! Mage knight lots on eBay can be had for .25 per mini shipped if you look around.

Amazon prices fluctuate wildly for Castle Ravenloft & Legend of Drizzit. Wait until they are about $36.00 before picking them up. They are about $55.00 today.
I recently tried out some free paper minis. I needed some Saughin (sea devils) for an up coming adventure and I don't see using them as bad guys often so I didn't want to spend the cash for regular minis. Printed them up and they look great. I hope my players like them because I'm going that route again.
