Been needing Will of the Whisps for my game and have tried a few times to make some but never liked the result until now, so thought I would share.
Materials:
Clear Hot Glue sticks
High temp glue gun
Clear Acrylic Beads around 1/2 Inch in diameter.
Clear material for a stand (Clear plastic forks work, I used a modeling kit sprue)
Washer or Woodsie for a base.
Step 1
Attach your clear stand material to one of the holes on the Acrylic bead with your preferred glueing method. Depending on the size of your stand material you may need to drill the hole bigger.
Step 2
Hold the bead by the clear stand and press the nozzle of the glue gun to the bead. With the gun's barrel directly on the bead apply light preasure on the glue gun trigger and begin moving the gun in small circular patterns along the beads surface until the bead is coated in a thin layer of hot glue. Don't worry about making perfect circles, you actually want a lot of variety and randomness in the patterns in order to make the surface look interesting in the light. Also don't worry if parts of the hot glue are thicker in some areas than others, you want the surface to appear a little chaotic like its a ball of plasma.
Note: You want to use a high temp hot glue gun for this. Your glue will come out clearer and you won't get a lot of spiderweb type strands when you pull the gun off the bead.
Step 3
After the glue has cooled attach the whisp by its clear stand to a washer or woodsie and your done.
Here's the finished product:

I tried experimenting with putting LEDs in the bead and paintwashes but wasn't happy with the way light passed through the beads with paint on them and the LED just highlighted every flaw in the bead and didn't give the desired effect I wanted.
I have a ton more beads to experiment with so will probably keep playing around and post any interesting findings or improvements I find.
