Fantasy Mapmaking Tutorial - Jessica Khoury
This is just what I was looking for and thought I would pass it along. Not so much dungeon mapping but overland mapping. I'm not a big Photoshop Guy. I use GIMP (go Open Source!) so it was a bit of tweaking but I like her concepts and she makes a map that is better than some published maps I have seen.

I seriously needed it for a side setting I am working on. Think of a bit of Dragon Age with lower key magic in a Colonial America setting..... A map super helps.

Just posted something about it and about using slavery in it.... Thinking of using it as a meta plot point.
Cherry picking a few things from Dragon Age such as the Elves being Displaced, having a recurring Blight and some clans of Dwarfs being surface dwellers because of the Blights coming from deep inside the earth.

I've seen some really neat tutorials to use for making maps in Photoshop on the Cartographer's Guild. Check the link below, they even use GIMP in some of them! Cartographers Guild Tutorials

I was going nutty in GIMP with some scaling stuff to another file.... when the stuff dries for the final stage (before sealing) will post some picture.
Two reasons I prefer GIMP to PS is that it is open source and the other is that I don't need all the fancy bells and whistles in PS. I just get lost looking at that stuff. I sort of look at it as GIMP is ny ride back and forth to work. It's a good car. I don;t need a top of teh line sports car (PhotoShop) to get back and forth around town.

Cartographer's guild has a TON of amazing tutorials that are easy to follow - and it also features a bunch of free resources and stamp packs to use. I am a complete novice with Photoshop programs but was able to make this in GIMP by following the tutorials on that forum.
