Okay so this is a really simple thing I found out one time while screwing around with fire. Yes I do stupid things like that. Anyways the items you will need are.. Pipecleaners Fire Thats it. Basically you take a pipecleaner like you can find in any craft department in most stores. Bag of a like 20 for $1 or less, You than proceed to light it on fire. Let it burn away till nothing but ash is left. I keep water nearbye to dunk it in if it gets out of control. After its done I wipe it clean using a paper towel. Run it under water and rub it with your fingers to get all the ash out of the way. When you're done the wire underneath will look like this Looks alot like woven rope doesn't it? The great thing about using it over some small rope to use in your modeling and the like is tht its not fabric/thread. It will not break easily and you can bend it to any shape you want. It will hold the shape just fine making it much easier to do things with. Here it is next to a model for scale comparison. What I am currently using the wire rope for is to make nooses for a hangman's tree I'm making as a scene for a game. It will be a tree with nooses hanging from it allover. Very creepy to look at. This is one of those nooses. All I did was take jewelry pliars and wrap it around one end to make the loop. I tha wrapped the extra around the main rope to give the rope loopes that the loop slides in.

Heavy weight braided fishing line also makes good rope. Not the monofilament fishing line but the braided kind used for big baitcasting reels.
Incidentally, very light monofilament (1 or 2 lb test if you can find it) can make decent spider webs.

Freaking brilliant! Normally I'd use some sisal twine but this is closer to scale. Looking at it I think of chain rather than rope. Regardless a great tip. Thanks.

The 'links' should be small enough that acrylic paint will fill them in... This should give it more of a rope look. Add in The Dip/dark wash, and it should be perfect... Will need to try this. It will allow players to 'equip' their figures with ropes, to customize them to look more accurate to their PC. Brilliant! Thank you for sharing!
I can also use this on some siege engine mini's. Originally, I used flosses employed for needlework. The floss is OK, but this, with paint and The Dip, would be much better. Cheers!

it works decently for chain too. usually for chain I get super small chain necklaces instead.

Thanks! I just used your technique to make some manacles. For some reason, my wire was wound much tighter, so it looked more like rope or cable. Manacles using pipe cleaner wire

Manacles using pipe cleaner wireThey look really great! Now I'm toying with the idea of making a chain golem: I still have some brass chains in my steampunk materials box, so I don't even have to use pipe cleaners. All i need is making some armature or use an old mini, wrap chains around either and viola - chain golem. Hmmm...
