I mentioned this in a threat awhile back about turning bottle caps into barrels for your games. Well I finally got myself motivated enough to actually go and make a tutorial on it for you all. So here we go.
Step one:
Get yourself two bottle caps. I prefer the ones found on things like Dr Pepper and other 7 Up brand products. Pepsi and Coke use a cap with a much more numerous ridging on it that is sharper looking. If going for Sci-Fi these will work. If going for a wood barrel use the Dr P type
Step Two:
Sand the bottoms of the caps. They might look pretty close but in truth they are likely not flat. FLatten them out by just gently rubbing them over a piece of sand paper.
Step Three:
Glue the caps end to end. I used super glue. You could use a glue gun as well if you wished. Either should work. Do your best to line the Ridges up. I used super glue cause it would make sure to hold and it gave me a little more time to adjust the caps before they dried. SUper glue could just be pealed off and tried again till you lined up.
Step Four:
Paint it. I forgot to take a photo after base painting it. I just painted it black. I than painted it brown with several coats of Nutmeg Brown paint. One layer is not enough. It went on pretty thin. I just kept adding it until it was fully painted brown.
After that I took cinnamon colored paint ans painted the ribbing that stuck up from the sides of the caps to give some highlight and simulate the barrel planking. I also smeared some across the top and bottom to try and replicate planking There.
Step Five:
Create the banding. I used note card for this. Any paperboard or suchs hould work. Paper is to thin. You need a bit of support. I cut two 4 inch long strips that were each 1/8 of an inch wide. I than proceeded to pain them black on both sides. After that they were Painted with Gun Metal.
Step Six:
Assemble it all. Take the bands and glue(with your choice of glue, I used superglue) one end of the band to the barrel. GLuing it to a rib is easier. Wrap the band around the barrel keeping it spaced evenly the whole way around. Glue the other end over the band when they overlap. You may have to adjust and add more glue in other spots to keep it in place. Repeat this with the second band. I than proceeded to take a black wash I created with water and black paint and painted over the entire thing to add detail and age its look some. The drawback of this was it got the note card paper wet. The bands stretched a bit. To fix this I just overlay the bands some on themselves till they were taunt again. After it was done drying I painted over the bands with some white glue to seal them in and give them some support.
And there you have a cheaply made barrel for your games. If you are curious about the size of it next to a model. Here is it held in my hand next to a Reaper Bones Mini I was working on. The white glue is still drying at the time I took that photo.
