I would like to see an actual tutorial on making buildings. I understand the box bottom but the roof is giving me fits. The triangle bits on the sides of the roof, are they glued to a single piece of folded card stock? I may be over thinking this but ive had to trash two roofs because they are too catywompus. Im thinking of making it out of wood instead of card stock because of this...

I always make sure that I use a cardboard base, like cereal box then add on whatever other element to it, whether it is shingles or half of a corrugated box. If you take a regular corrugated cardboard box, and peel off 1 side, you end up with a pattern that looks kind of like corrugated steel/tin. Of course you have to clean it up, little bits of the 1 side will be stuck on it, but a little sand paper and you're ready to paint.

I'd love to see Scotty's take on a 3d house. The scaling is my hardest problem. It either comes out looking too big or too small.

General rule of thumb for most moderen building is that one story is about 10ft not counting the A-frame for the roof.

also sounds sort of obvious but go out and look around at houses in your neighborhood. Look at the shapes and how they fit together.
That idea might not work well when next to a mini but they cal help with the overall look of the building. When I was taking a CAD class (and my minor dabbling in 3d stuff) it helped to just look at stuff and break it down into shapes and how they related to each other.

Everyone has hit the high points. Even if you don't use a grid for most 72nd scale minis or 25-28mm figs 1 inch is 5 feet.
Some people really like large rooms I find that a little unrealistic. Historicaly homes were smaller than modern McMansions.
One easy way to handle roof tops is to pick starting boxes with a pitched top. Toco Bell family meal boxes, Dunkin Doughnuts Coffee boxes, classic Happy Meal boxes. Use the existing top to set the pitch of the roof. Cut the box all the way around about 2-3 inches from the top if you are making a single story building. Cut around the box about an inch from the bottom for the floor. This lets you lift away the top and leave a small wall on the bottom. I will take pictures of the one I have about finished.
One word of warning they pitch of these is not great for miniatures on top. DM Scotty has a video about buildings and talks about his issue and makes roofs with a slight pitch for this reason.

You might want to go over to Fat Dragon Games, he makes cardstock terrain and he has a cardstock piece that can be put on a pitched roof that allows a mini to stand on it. You could do something similar when making your crafted pitched roofs!

As far as pitch minis can handle with out sliding off or toppling over, I saw a terrain tutor video experimenting with pitch and by the end, the result was for every 3 inches forward you can slope up one inch this is for most metal minis possibly greater if you are using small lightweight minis with lower center of gravity.

Makes most of my roofs out of pizza box cardboard (it has smaller corrugation):
Tear of the lit. Make it wet for a few seconds. Tear of the top layer. Let it dry. Remove the remains of the top layer with sandpaper. Draw 5mm strips on the back. Cut out the needed size. Enumerate each strip. Cut out the individual strips. Glue on the strips in the correct order using white glue, starting from the bottom of the roof. Let the glue dry. Add a topping for the roof out of cereal box cardboard, 1 cm wide, scored down the middle with a scissor. Glue on using hot glue. Paint the roof red, 2-3 three layers. Let it dry well. Paint it with watered down black paint. Remove most of the black paint with a sponge. Let it dry. Maybe highlight the ridges wet brushing with red. That's it. You’re done.

I love the Grain Mill with water wheel video, but would love to see it built from scratch.
