Ok, so to go along with my first contest entry, I give you the first tutorial. I’m going to start with the sewer monster I made. Now this is just how I came up with doing it, if anybody has other ideas or thoughts, please share!
So to start I used clear plastic cups from the $.99 store. These were labeled wine glasses and come five in a pack.
I started by removing the base (it just pops off) and cutting off the stem with a razor saw. You could used a hobby knife, but BE CAREFUL.
Then I placed the glass on wax/parchment/grease/baking paper. (hope I got them all ) and filled the hole with hot glue just to seal it.
For the arms I used standard aquarium tubing. Available at your local mega store (cheaper than the pet store) I think it’s ¼ inch. I cut two pieces around 2 inches, then cut one end at a 45 angle then hot glue them where you want them. On the right, to get more of an angle, I heated it up with a hair dryer and held it until it cooled.
For the sludge, I used Locktite CRYSTAL CLEAR caulk. I use this for my water effects so I had some around. A note on this stuff if you haven’t used it before, it doesn’t have the strong order that clear caulk has, it comes out white at first and dries clear, and is creamy in texture until dry. The downside is it isn’t overly expensive, but it isn’t cheap, and if you don’t have a caulk gun, then you need to buy one. I think it has the same properties as Mod Podge, but I haven’t used Mod Podge before.
Anyway just squirt some into a mixing container, and color it with my secrete weapon, food coloring. For me three drops did the job, and mix completely.
Now start at the top and drag the caulking downward until it is completely covered.
Once covered, sculpt the eyes and mouth by draging away the caulk. Make it messy, the more random the better it will look and let it dry.
Here is where your milage may vary. Both times I had to apply a second coat of caulk to get the look I was after, but you may like one, or three. So I applied the second layer and let dry.
Next come the eyes. On the inside of the glass, paint in the eyes and mouth whatever color you like. I used neon yellow craft paint. When that dried I painted inside “ice cream white” Don’t worry about brush strokes, just get the whole thing covered inside.
Finally, I gave it some pupils on the outside, and applied a black wash to bring out the details.
