An alternative to using cardboard for the markers is to get the finest plastic needlepoint canvas, cut a strip a little narrower than the spine of your book, and attach the ribbons to it by tying through the holes. The D&D books are probably too thin for this technique, but it works well for books with a wider spine. Then you carefully insert the strip of plastic canvas in the spine, as you described for the cardboard. The plastic needlepoint canvas is sturdier than cardboard if your book has a wide enough spine to use it.

You can spray ink-jet prints with a sealer like a Krylon clear product to seal the ink. Done this for many years with watercolors when decoupaging with ModPodge. And did the same when making monster tokens for my grandson's first D&D game.

Another great alert post! Glad you are keeping up with these things. Myself, I think I would repaint all the white / beige as a darker blue, but I like the blue on the body. Maybe just a very thin coat of dark blue wash.
I see that RECUR is specifically identifying this as useful for RPGs as well as a children's toy =)

That's a gorgeous gold dragon! I bought the ice dragon a few years ago. Its perfect for the role. But I haven't been doing much shopping lately and had no idea that Schleich was making elementals. Good to know! Don't forget to use the 40% off coupon, especially for the gold dragon. Thanks for alerting us to these.
FYI to those who have not previously invested in or considered these figures - a sgtslag's images with miniatures shows, they are BIG.

12/18/2023: It's down to USD $32 today. Nice deal, although without Amazon Prime you would have to order something else also to get free shipping

Looks like a chanterelle to me, but maybe that's because it's yellow. I like it, whatever it is =)

Thanks for the advice on painting this foam. It looks much bulkier to store than double-layer cardboard, though.

On re-reading the 2e spell description, I believe you need 20 tentacles for that 16th level wizard, which makes for a pretty crowded 30- square-foot AoE. Even if the wizard only rolls a 1, they would still get 17.

I think of the tentacles as being more extended, but I can understand that the maker wants them more durable than a set of single long tentacles would be

Impressive! Are you going to modify a table-top globe spindle to support it or just use a base dish like some gloves?

Thanks for the tip about the plastic car spray undercoat. Never thought of that - still not used to cars being plastic!

Interesting conversion. Tip for those who haven't gone in for Safari dragons yet: some hobby stores carry a selection. If you have a nearby store that gives regular 40% off coupons, you can get the dragons for a lot less than regular price. I got the ice dragon back when the Frostgrave game first came out.

It's great that you are doing all this while working and feeling lousy. Sounds like you have introduced a lot of people to some of the old, but useful, materials.

I think ordinary tissue paper should work fine, but if it's a little too fragile, kite paper might be a workable option.
