Hi everyone!
Been a while since my last visit and little project, but I've made a few new bits.
My previous tower did not quite 'do it' for me, so I made a new one. As well as a start to some general purpose 'buildings' that can be combined and what not. First one is an old stone building ruin.. with a little imagination.
I know that a lot of folks use foam-board and what not, but I decided just to see what I had in the house. Happened to have a bunch of styrofoam uhm whatever you call them, the insides of a cardboard box/package. had about 8 similar ones, small foam boxes with an open top.. just some 'support structure' inside for the product that was shipped in 'em.
So I squared off/out those insides of them, and then cut a few layers off of them, like rings off the top if you will.. which then can become walls/ a building, in an already nice cornered shape. Cutting and combining can make more elaborate layouts, obviously. And I can make more than one per building, so they can stack and be several floors.
The first 'ring' of foam, I made this ruined building with, for a simple single floor start.. next I have a tavern planned. The brick patterns were traced with a small soldering iron, which worked okay (just dont do this inside or without protection, it's kinda noxious...) Plain old hobby paint first, no spraypaint or else the styrofoam dissolves, but then a finishing touch with some clear matt spray-paint which didn't mess up things too badly but did give the bricks a nice gnarly look instead of being smooth and stryrofaomy hehe..
For the bricks and stones, also on the tower, I used simple kitchen sponges, cut into strips and then bricks, if you will. Not the greatest material to paint and it does 'work' a little after paint so gaps get bigger than you wanted them to be.. but on the table it looks great, and it's super lightweight and won't damage even if dropped from the table, or higher. The tower is two yogurt buckets stacked end to end, and has two tiers. Not quite finished, but what do you guys think? (not the greatest pictures, I'll make some nicer ones with some stuff combined on the actual table.)
Kind regards,
Fred
