I'm having a rough time tracking down any guides on crafting hot coals.
Anyone have suggestions or a tutorial they could recommend?

I assume you are referring to something like the fuel in a coal forge for a smith/armorer/weapon smith? The burning charcoal is white, black, gray, and orange. DM Scotty has some videos featuring fires, wherein he paints burning fires: braziers; campfire; inferno terrain; brazier #2; mini fire for hearth; alchemical fire markers. I used his wet-blend techniques to make a large bonfire pit for my 2.75D model of the Steading of the Hill Giants, Great Hall ( thread link, scroll down towards the bottom of the page for the photo's of my fire pit). I can't really say much on 'tutorials' available, other than DM Scotty's videos. I do hope, however, I've shared something useful to your endeavors. Cheers!

You might also try viewing theDMG's episode 134, crafting a dungeon fire pit. You might want to leave a bit more black and gray showing on the coals, but using Styrofoam for the coals is a great idea.

Id say go with the vid and also drybrush some black on top for the untouched coals around the rim or top.
Check this one from Wappel's site, the instructions are linked below

Thank you for all the suggestions, I'll try a few things and see what works.
