Hi, everyone, I've made these new tiles for a two DM campaign that we're starting up. So, I like tilescapes, but I'm not such a good flat painter so I wanted something with a more 3d look. I cut two pieces of foamboard, stuck them together, sculpted one side into bricks, and glued coffee stir sticks to the other side. Then threw on some strips of cereal box to cover the seam. Slapped some glue and paint washes on there, and viola, two-sided tiles. I won't lie, these were painstaking, but I love how they look. Sorry for the shamefully unpainted minis in this one. For the caves, I simply cut a curvy piece of cardboard, glued it to another piece, and built up the formations with smaller discs of cardboard. Then I textured the whole thing with paper towels and painted. I haven't yet crafted the tunnel entrance terrain pieces, but they're still pretty playable.

I love it!
The wood especially, it looks like some real aged, scuffed and blood/beer stained wood, perfect for a pub!
Paint those townies up and update us with them when youre done!
PS The Mage needs to cast fireball and forget the guy in the cell.
"Sorry boys, the dungeon has spiders.... burn the place to the ground."

It's funny, on my old setups I didn't even notice the unpainted ones. Now it's all I can see.

Great looking tiles. Good approach to making them as well!

Great looking tiles. Good approach to making them as well! Thank you. After I took these pictures, they curled up pretty bad, but I found an easy fix. Just separate every few planks with a razor blade to relieve the pressure.

Yeah, I've found that foamcore has a tendency to curl. I finally managed to get a hold of some double thick corrugated cardboard. Both Lowes and Home Depot are now carrying storage boxes that are made from the double thick corrugated cardboard, and they aren't really that expensive. So I picked up some, now I just have to get the time to make my tiles! Think I've finally decided how I'm going to lay mine out!

Glad to hear it. Think I'll have to pick up some of that cardboard myself.
Hopefully, at some later point, I'll have time to setup my cave tiles and show them off, too

I need to make cavern tiles, yours turned out nice!
The curling is a big deal no doubt, unless you get a hold of some vinyl/linoleum floor tiles or something else.
Ive been weighing my foam core bases down while drying and even for a while after that. It helps quite a bit but its time consuming. Ive went so far as to glue large tongue depressors on the bottom to combat curling on hallways, but a year on they still curl enough to spin around awkwardly.
Have you considered making molds out of the cavern tiles, and phasing out the card/paper based scatter?

The thought has definitely crossed my mind, but for right now, I really like the low cost of cardboard. Although, it would be really cool to lay something down and know that it's not going anywhere. I've been using an anti-skid mat to keep my terrain from ice skating around, but it doesn't do anything for curling.

Nice looking tiles. Where did you get the Cave Fishers?

I made them :-) the bodies are just sculpey that I glued some bug legs to. I think I pulled the legs and the pincers off a pair of scorpion toys. Then I glued them to some cutouts of plastic lids for clear bases.

Thank you. I actually made the spider webs with a 3d pen. It was pretty easy. I haven't found many crafts that the pen works really well for.
