Hi, all,
I am in need of a pin vise, some small drill bits, and some needle files. I've been scouring Amazon and have found many hits Of course I don't want to spend a ton of money but I want a decent product that I can use to make/customize cool minis. If anyone could provide some links and recommendations that would be awesome.

The more expensive articles are for people who are doing precision work - gunsmiths, jewelers, etc. I think you can successfully customize minis with the cheap products. One file set you might want to consider is at: www.amazon.com/Piece-Precision-Needle-File-Set/dp/B006N3EPKEThis set comes with handles, which most do not. If you have a tendency to stick the handle end of the file [it's pointy] in your palm during use, the handles make a big difference. Read the reviews and assess the quality based on the degree of precision you think you need. But I am sure others who do more mini-modding than I will weigh in on this.

For a pin vice, you might want to start somewhat smaller.
While they aren't entirely as useful as a full one, there's the mini hobby-drills that you can find in most of the bigger "hobby" stores (I've seen it in Michaels and Hobby Lobby) where it's a small drill with a few bits for around $5 or less. It works for just about everything you need early on and is still useful for other things after that when you upgrade to a better one.
Just look in the area with the dollhouse stuff for them.

Margaret, thanks for the suggestion, I was just doing this thing where I research so much that I lose the ability to make a decision. I'll check out that set.
sotf, thanks, those are what I was looking for. I didn't see it when I searched JoAnns and Michaels but I was searching for pin vise and not drill.

I personally include small wood carving chisels into my set of miniature tools, helps with really small plastic mold lines and saves my hobby blades.

I do a lot of my small tool shopping at MicroMark. No I'm not affiliated with them in any way. They just have lots of really good tools that I like to use when crafting. You might be able to find a tool through them and get it cheaper on eBay or Amazon, but they are a great place to start looking.

Like skunkape, I am a MicroMark Guy. Check out the finger drills. I find them easier to use than the pin vise.

thanks for posting the links to the ones you decided on. I am sure they will get you a long way and give you time to decide if you want to invest more.
