Great work, love both elementals!
The plant accents on the earth elemental add a really nice touch.
And for the water elemental: I can imagine that one or two small puddles on the surf in front of the wave would add another level of cool. Personally I'd try that first on a test piece before I work on the elemental itself so I wouldn't risk to ruin it.

Your Water Elemental is superb, and so is your Earth Elemental. Very inspiring. Thanks for sharing! Cheers!

As for the Water Elemental, here is a link to what I did for a Huge Fire Elemental figure (Scroll down the page to seeit; this is what a 24 HD Fire Elemental should look like, IMHO). Perhaps it will give you an idea on how to make your Water Elemental? I've been thinking of using the same basic technique, only shaping it differently, and then painting it blue and white, to make it into Water, instead of Fire Elemental. Cheers! Since I got a very nice result from your suggestion, I decided that I wanted to try it straight as you wrote it as well... right down to the shape to cut out (since I really liked the result) :-) First came my clear plastic armature. I forgot to get a picture of the hot glue covered armature before I went on to give it its first layer of color - yellow mixed with a bit more gloss medium than I intended (tip of the dropper bottle clogged and came off -> very glossy yellow wash). But after it dried I decided to do three smaller ones (since I already have three medium-sized water elementals from the Drizzt figure set, and I quite like those, I would like to end up with about three 25mm based elementals of earth, fire, and air... No I do not have OCD... although it would be nicer if they would just spell it CDO). I think they look promising and I will post updates as I get them painted - looking forward to seeing how flame-like I can get it :-)

Being in the mood, I also did something else - but still in the elemental theme... The lightning is just another piece of clear plastic, but this time I put a length of thick steel wire on top before gluing it up. The cloud is just a bit of pillow stuffing, that I covered partially with hot glue to both bind it to the lightning and give it some shape and texture. I'm going to cover it in a mix of white glue and white craft paint to hopefully give me a nice paintable surface with the base color already on there. I'll get back to this when that dries.

Incredible. I'm ripping off your water elemental as I type this.

Great, glad to be your inspiration :-)
I'd love to see your finished version - and any personal twists you might come up with.
BTW: Glue+white paint coating on the cloud looked promising this morning. Pictures to follow :-)

We wait in Anticipation to see the result The first layer of paint (with glue) turned out real nice. The surface has the swirling, flowing, and uneven texture, that I planed to get, and I think that a few layers of greys and such will give me a nice storm cloud look. The actual lightning I'm thinking of doing in a sharp electric blue with lots of gloss and some very light highlights.

With both the cloud and the bolt, I'd suggest starting lightly and adding more paint only if you need it. Although I suppose you want to hide that wire support, I would guess you don't need a lot more color to make this look spectacular.

Very cool. These are giving me some ideas on something elemental I need to create for the campaign I am running.

I got a bit more work done on my thundercloud this week :-) After thinking about subtle ways to make it look nice, I decided to turn it up a bit and go for something cartoonish, so out came a heavy wash of blue and gloss to hide away the wire. On top of that I put this in a mix of gloss and light blue (GW Ice Blue). I'm planing to do a white or possibly silver+white mix thin line inside the light blue - hoping that will evoke the right feeling... And very much not be subtle... :-) It's a little hard to get it lighted right (might need to do a light box at some point), but it's really glossy and reflective - quite unlike most of what I usually paint - not going to be my last experiment with glossy stuff.

Looking for more elemental inspiration, I came across this old thread. Threw together this dude in about a half hour. I was in a groove, so I didn't take as many pictures as I probably ought to have. I haven't painted the base, and I'll likely do some more details (like gyrm's snow flock). Hope you like it. All this is done with hot-glue, wire, and paint. I guess some card-stock was used for the base as well. That inspired me to do a little bit of carving (OK... maybe I spent an hour or so cutting little bits away from half a stick of glue...). Mounted it on a frame of plastic sticks - wanted the armature white. Details a bit hard to get in just the clear glue, but there's a few fingers carved in each hand, an edge to the blade and a couple of holes and a crack for eyes and mouth - plus lots of just flat faces carved out. Then I went in with the glue gun and just built up the shape. Had to stay careful and take breaks not to get it too hot. Once I had the bulk, I just carved anything too round away again - I wanted sharp edges and lots of little flat faces in different directions. I also added a few leftover bits from earlier to get it looking like icicles. Then he got to cool off before getting the thinnest blue wash I could mix - like half a drop of Ice Blue with a couple of drops of white, some water, and lots of gloss. Then a drybrush with white + gloss - mixed about evenly I think - and a bit of basing. So now I have Earth, Water, and Ice with Fire and Thunder on its way - and I'm getting close to a decision on how to do Air. I suspect I'll be doing a few Earth and Air on 25mm bases as well - I might skip those for Water since I actually like the ones from Drizzt. I haven't decided yet, if I'm doing any on even smaller bases (just looked it up in the 4th Ed. MM3 - that has Lesser (small), "Normal" (medium), and Greater (large) elemental in the four base elements - and I do have some really small bases...), but either way, that's going to be quite a set of elementals :-)

Yeah, he turned out quite alright. And I have no clue how to convey the translucency in pictures - you can't quite see through him, but holds him against a light source and he really looks like very blue ice :-)

Nice!!! Works for me as a disturbing, smiling, Ice Elemental, who enjoys his work -- too much! Cheers!

Very cool, they both look better than the production models imo.
One thought, have you considered gemstones for eyes for the earth elemental? I think it might look cool and it would be a nice way to add some treasure, maybe make them cheap stones but with the ability to look through several feet of dirt?
Edit: Wow, just noticed I came late to the party, hadn't even seen the last three elementals, more great work there. Thanks for sharing.

Seems that wherever I look in this forum, I find inspiration for more elementals :-) Came across this one, and I just had to try a variation. Here is a crystal elemental I made for a project. Just some craft crystals and some hot glue, but they are not as heavy as rock. Nor is my elemental as large as yours. I did notice that the rock for his right peck has a hole in it that looks like a skull. Makes me want to make an undead elemental with bones. My version was made from some cheap aquarium stuff in clear acrylic or something like that. This time I didn't get any process pictures taken, but after breaking the crystals into pieces I just stacked wit hotglue, bulked out with more hotglue, added a carved hot glue head, and finished with a coat of gloss varnish with a drop of green ink in. The result is my attempt at an emerald/crystal elemental: But in spite of the cheap crystals and maybe a few cents worth of hot glue and varnish, this is by far the most expensive elemental I've made for this project: I used my shop vice to break the crystals by squeezing them - the last on fought back and broke the jaw of the vice clean off! :-( Luckily it's a cheap one, so not a big disaster there - but a new one will still cost me more than I've spent on this project so far.

Very sharp Crystal Elemental (no pun intended)! Sorry to hear it caused so much hassle. Good for the rest of us to know, though. Cheers!
