So, my gaming group has a running joke that I don't have the right props for a session. It's true, I don't always have *the exactly right prop* for a session (who does if you're running a sandbox?) but I mostly have something *that will work.* Part of my desire for a 3D printer is that I will probably be able to find models and/or mock things up as the inspiration strikes. Here are a few models from Thingiverse -- these will fit well in my bag of tricks... I'm going to make a statue to "The Builder," a dwarven deity in the Stonehell campaign I'm playing in... I'm running the 6th Gun right now. I picture this golem filled with gunpowder... These low-polygon mooks are really awesome. They print without supports and I think that these three printed in well under an hour. Gonna paint them up and see how that looks. More to come!

I love the dwarf. He would make a terrific Moradin statue. I might just need to print that guy off just to break him apart. I need a ruined Moradin statue....

Someone posted earlier this week asking the guy that made the Dwarf for a different version with a single War Hammer. Hopefully he will post one. I am going to print 2 of them for the entrance to a fortress in my game.

OK, the 3D printer is awesome for gaming/crafting, but I also want to use it for practical projects around the house. THIS is where 3D printing is heading (in the near future, YMMV) You need a widget? Don't buy it -- print it. I needed a small, no-nonsense shelf in my exercise room to hold my DirecTV receiver under my LCD TV. Nothing fancy, just a little shelf. Well I found this bracket www.thingiverse.com/thing:50515 and I printed one. Here's the result.

It's stuff like that which might help me justify the purchase Cool bracket!

It's stuff like that which might help me justify the purchase Cool bracket! It's a really sturdy bracket. It prints flat with no supports. I ran it at .2 mm and it looks great.

So here are a few more things. Big. Printed at 0.2 with rafts/no supports. I've got to start painting!

NIce, I need to print up some of those crystals. I have been focused mostly on terrain pieces so far. Btw, there is a revised Dwarf statue now with a single hammer. It was posted on facebook but they still haven't updated or added the new model on Thingiverse.

I love all three of those pieces you just printed! I don't understand how you printed them all without supports. What settings did you use to accomplish this? What was the temperature of your extruder ?

According to the instructor for the course I just took in order to be able to use the 3D printer at my local library, if the change in slope is gradual enough, an outward slope can be created without supports. Think of piping a line of icing that sticks out just a little from the previous line - every line just a smidgeon farther out.
Those crystals look to my eye as though they have too much slope for that, but apparently my eye is wrong.

The frog's legs are a gentle slope yet they were all jacked up on the underside of mine (sagging layers). I might of used too high of a temp? Or is the .1 layers problematic? I see wilamric used .2 layers. I am still wondering what other settings he used.. e.g. extruder temp. WOuld be nice if possible if he could share a screenshot of the advanced settings panel in MakerBot Desktop.

What was the temperature of your extruder ? 215° C. I haven't adjusted the speeds of the printing -- they are still at default. I'll probably start playing with that though, sometimes smaller areas get a bit "goopy" cuz the plastic doesn't quite harden correctly before the next layer is printed.
