Meph, so what do you think of your new printer compared to the Monoprice?

I like it. I have a lot more control over my prints. The auto leveling bed makes life so much easier also. The quality is nice.

i think assembly is just better then printing whole stuff with support and all. i mean thats how warhammer does it and many WotC minis are part built and it works really well.
that a nice purpole wurm and i actually like the slim body compared tot he massive thing that DMscotty has done. though i'd use both because of their sizes and difference. but i like slim wurms more they seem much better to me. so thats a really nice wurm.

If you are too high your prints wont stick as well, if you are too low the extruder will force the PLA onto the bed. You need to find that perfect height for the extruder to properly lay the PLA down for correct adhesion. Your printer only uses those wingnuts. I was releveling it daily when I was printing non-stop.

Maybe that's why my rafts often are hard to get off, resulting in having to use a chisel?

I was having a really hard time getting those rafts off also. I was using a razor blade to get mine off.

Thanks. There is so much available for free right now though (thingiverse etc) and more and more is becoming available for free as time passes. Printable scenery also has a kickstarter for a very nice set. I dunno.

Earlier today I saw a blog of a guy who had gotten in on the first Dwarven Forge kickstarter. He bought 5 full sets unpainted and was putting them together. It looked impressive. So I decided to go check out the original kickstarter and see what he paid. They actually had a pack which is 5 sets in grey for $260 with free shipping. That is 150 pieces of Dwarven Forge for $260 back in 2012. That exact same set today on their site is exactly $299 shipped. So if we buy 1kg of PLA for $25. That is $.025 per gram. An diagonal corner uses 16 grams, a 2x2 floor tile uses 14 grams, a 2x2 edge wall uses 24 grams, a 2x2 edge corner uses 35 grams. I know it's not accurate but just for kicks lets say that your average is 22 grams per piece, although I think that will be a bit high. Anyways at 22 grams per piece then 150 pieces would cost you $82. Much better imo than $299 and even those you will still have to paint. In defense of the first 2 DF kickstarters, the stretch goals were very generous. I think in the first one you basically got one set free per set paid. Caverns was great too. The after KS sets on the website are overpriced and stingy (and not selling all that well Africa). In addition, they have lost their minds with the last two KS, this latest one is insanity.

I agree, DF prices are to the point where I won't consider them (I need to do a write-up on my 3D, full sized, cavern walls, as well as my 2.5D dungeon walls soon). The castle is for those with incredibly 'disposable' income... I actually enjoy making castles, and terrain pieces, using card stock PDF models to skin them with. My costs are far below even 3D printers' filament costs, as posted. To each their own, though. Cheers!

The thing is DF needs to continue to innovate as their older sets have already been completely obsoleted via 3D printing (who knew nerds like to game and compute?). This castle sets is pretty cool, and all the magnets make it groovier, however, I am not in the market for castles, $3 princess castles from goodwill are available, I also have a 2nd hand playmobile castle taking up space, and my retro DF tiles make a satisfactory castle with these items which my buddy has printed for me: www.thingiverse.com/thing:512229But I am considering selling my DF, and buying a 3D printer for 1.25 inch scale tiles

Btw, I was talking with Devon Jones for a while yesterday and he is releasing yet another collection of tiles on the 15th. They will be "Cut Stone" tiles vs the rough stone that the dungeon tiles are. They will also have printable options to connect tiles with magnets or with filaments. He said all his new tiles will have that and he is going to start retroactively adding it to his older sets. I have stopped printing any tiles for now until I see his new collection.
Between the Openforge tiles, the printable scenery cavern tiles, and the Winterdale kickstarters I think there is easily enough 3d printed materials that we can print to our hearts desires, all for a fraction of what a small Dwarven Forge set would cost.

Don't forget the Fat Dragon Dragonlock files as well.
One must have a #D printer too and the mats, it seems it is now cheap and durable enough to meet the needs of the common people, thanks early adapters! But be gentle to Stephan of DF. He is a hard nerd who spent many years living poorly doing DF. Up until the first KS, he was still living on couches and DMing for cash (no lie). He did have NYC society adopted parents as a backup so he was not destitute by any means. The first KS really changed his fortunes around. Of course, things have changed and technology has advanced so they have to keep up as well.

Whats up with Winterdale 2. If I want everything from 1 and 2 what should I pledge on the Indiegogo page?

I'm not too impressed with the quality of Dragonlock. Although the tile texture and wall texture look nice.

I bought the Dungeon 1 set and only printed a few pieces. The OpenForge tiles were better quality and used less materials and time to print.
