Miguel Zavela has 6 pages of miniatures on Shapeways, so if you don't find what you want on the linked page, just scroll down to the page links at the bottom and skip to another page.

Sigh... scheduling conflict. The problem with using library equipment I suppose. Next week now... Wow your local library has a 3D scanner? Indeed, they do. According to the lady who runs the 3d programs, it's a $3,000 scanner, and is the same model Jay Leno uses to make custom car parts.

This is an amazing thread! I have a friend that creates models on Shapeways. So I've purchased 3D printed stuff before. Lots and lots of 3D prints. The idea of an affordable 3D printer is rather mind-blowing. I look forward to seeing all the work you guys come up with. Curufin, how is the 3D drafting coming along?

Michka, I haven't had time to do much with it. Im still trying get the printer dialed in. I will be taking another look though. I have tons of little parts and pieces that I use to make my speeders and a lot of them are awesome, but don't fit together very well. If I could design a piece that fit between them, I could not only marry the pieces together, but i could build them much faster. I have had a new speeder on my desk for two weeks now that I'm not that happy with. It feels clunky to me and I bet a 3D printer could have really helped.

curufin -- you mentioned leveling the platen. I suppose that once I get this done, I won't want to be moving the printer... I guess I'd better get a solid location for it... How critical *is* a super level platen, in your experience?

How critical *is* a super level platen, in your experience? I have moved it after leveling. I have it sitting on the carpet in the guest room. It does make some noise while it is printing, this way I can shut the door. I didn't re-level it after moving and it is fine. However, I probably wouldn't take it on car rides, to the park, or long walks on the beach without at least running the level check. A level platen is critical for printing..... that is just level between the platen and the extruder (the machine doesn't have to be level). Im not sure how many micron (+/-) it can be off, though a couple thicknesses of paper would certainly result in failed prints. It is also recommended that the level check be run after x prints... but I haven't done that yet.

Just talked to my brother and boyfriend and they both said they'd chip in $75 each. That leaves me with $150 to chip in. I suggested this because I would be using it much more than they would so I think it's fair.
My brother is a machinist/cnc programmer and draws all sorts of things in 3D CAD and I figure he could make good use of it for things around the house, the car, toys etc. My boyfriend is mechanically inclined and does all his own car repairs so I figure he could use it too.
The thing is, where can I get a good 3D printer now for $300, since that sale is overwith?
By the way, are you guys happy with that printer? Should I pull the trigger if I can call Monoprice and get them to sell it for $300?
Jennifer
EDIT: oh, it's on sale again for $299 I guess. Just looked. Should I pull the trigger? How much is a replacement spool of plastic after I run out? Where do I buy this spool?

I'm still learning right now and have a ton of questions for curufin. Right now I am printing another tile to see how I like the walls. The open forge tiles are nice but I am not sure about the high walls and 2" tile size. I am trying a couple different styles and then I might edit the files to cut the wall height in half. We'll see.

I think $299 is the price point of this printer. It may have the occasional spike to $600 but I think it will always come back down. I don't think someone should feel like they are under the gun or racing the sale price. Replacement spools of PLA plastic are $20-29 on amazon and come in a multitude of colors.

So the plastic is standardized? Not like what printer companies try and do with printer inks? e.g. HP wants $350 for a set of color toner drums that I can buy OEM for $50.

Yes, there are only a couple of different sizes. you'll want 1.75mm PLA. Also, there are 3rd party extruder parts out there that would allow you to buy PLA in pellet form (much cheaper) and extrude your own plastic wire. You could also reuse all the raft and support plastic as well as failed prints....no waste.

curufin For the failed prints do you just break them up into small pieces (which is also a cathartic exercise after a bad day...lol), and then they get melted back down? I must admit that I did not research for very long before posting. This is intriguing because we got a 3d printer at work and I told them that I thought there was a way to recycle the parts that did not work.

Yes. The wire extruder is pretty much a fancy hot glue gun. The little pieces go in a heated hopper and it gets forced through a 1.75mm (or what ever size you need your wire to be) nozzle and cools. I suppose it is also not unlike the Play-dough fun factory...
