Yeah, it happened.... I broke down and got a 3D Printer. It's a Maker Architect 3D Printer from Monoprice. For $300, I'm very impressed! I had never printed anything before nor had I ever used any 3D print software, and I was printing within an hour of unboxing it. Im still learning and playing around with settings, but I started printing some minis. I have done no real clean up on these minis, I just broke off the printing supports. A Glabrezu demon. I think it came out very nice and clean. His back needs some clean up though. Miniature Market wants $28.50 for their Glabrezu... I think this $0.38 version will do just fine... Shrieker and Violet Fungus: Both stems and tops look good...though the under cuts could use some help. 2 Ettercaps and a Dretch demon. The small (middle) Ettercap was the first mini I printed. He came out a little small and had some trouble with an arm. I adjusted some settings and printed another on (this time at 125% scale) and it came out nearly perfect. The dretch lost part of an ear, but I think that just adds character.
Im still learning. Computers were never my strong suit. All in all, not bad for a dollars worth of plastic. Plenty more to come ( I've got a Hook Horror printing now).

Im printing at the highest resolution (.1mm layer hight) my printer will do. I am doing 15% infill and I have slowed the printer down to "help" (I think) with quality. The smaller minis (Dretch and Ettercap) took 35-50 min each. The fungus was about 1h 20min each and the Glabrezu was about 3 hours. I could cut those times nearly in half, but the resulting print wouldn't look as good. However, setting adjustments might take care of the quality issue at those speeds..... I just don't know enough yet.

The short answer is yes. This Printer cant print gcode or stl files. This is by far the biggest con of this printer. This printer only prints X3G files. Im using (currently) MakerBot Desktop to export stl files to X3G. So yes, I can print pretty much any file type... I just have to jump though one extra hoop at the end.

"Hey look, a rabbit hole. What to see how far it goes?" I just ran a preview of devon Jones OpenForge 2x2 tile with a single solid wall. It would take about 3h 30min to print and would use about 25g of plastic... (roughly $0.57 worth).
EDIT:
Im printing a 2x2 floor now. 1h 30min and 15g of plastic. I'll send it off to you so you can see first hand what it looks like.

I was just about to plop down $100 for miniatures for Frostgrave but maybe I can get my BF to go in half on the printer for $150 each. Then I can just print out everything assuming there are models readily available for undead etc.

Very nice. Did you create the 3D files or download them? All downloaded. I started to play around with creating... but in the most rudimentary minecrafty sort of way.

Curufin, where did you get all those models or did you design them yourself with 3D CAD software?

Curufin, where did you get all those models or did you design them yourself with 3D CAD software? Everything originated from this thread. They are all files that can be freely downloaded. The direct link the the mini files are here. 6 pages worth of minis.

I wonder how those printers hold up? Can you do hundreds (or even thousands) of runs before breaking?
Really thinking about getting one.
