Well, I once wanted to create a challenge for a 5th level party in 5e, as they usually ace encounters with only one enemy. I decided to add in stirge swarms around the troll they were supposed to fight (I also used the vile limbs variant, except every time a limb was cut off a swarm would pop out - they had been embedding themselves in the troll for years). Trouble was, there weren't any rules for stirge swarms that I could find, so I decided to use the rules for a bat swarm. Except every time it landed an attack, 1d4 stirges would attach themselves... and every turn the players didn't remove a stirge, each would perform their blood-draining attack. Yeah... the party killed the troll instantly - it didn't get an attack off - but the swarms of creatures they thought they could ignore almost wiped them out.

Famous last words by the players: "What's up with those trees? They are buzzing."

Seeing these kinda made me wonder if instead of one Stirge on one base maybe some sort of base that can act like a Stirge swarm? Maybe make the Stirges a bit smaller and use like a larger base clear plastic maybe with several of the little blood suckers on it at different levels?

I like this idea a lot and think it would be super cool. However at this time I already have twenty one minis. eleven single stirges on tall stands and ten minis with two per stand. Also I'm not sure how I could make these smaller unless I went with wire instead of toothpicks. I can totally visualize what you are saying. I just had a thought, I could use the TP method with a small bead for the head maybe? hmmm let me see what I can come up with.
