I played an RPG session Sunday, using my cut/textured/painted foam insulation pieces to form cavern walls, with a patterned drop-cloth floor. I had numerous pieces of various shapes and sizes, which I plopped down to form the caves, and caverns for the players. I was using a map from an old Judges Guild Caves & Caverns book, circa 1979. The book just has drawings of cavern complexes, allowing the GM to populate it with whatever they choose. I filled mine with Goblins, for a party of 1st level characters to cut their teeth on.
Granted, my stuff is full 3D, not 2.5D, but the concept is the same, regardless. It worked exceptionally well, I thought. One of my players has bought into Dwaven Forge stuff, quite heavily. He commented that if I had mentioned it, he could have brought his DF stuff over to use. I didn't have the heart to tell him, but the DF would have taken M-U-C-H longer to set up! I was able to construct, and de-construct, rooms, corridors, etc., within two minutes or less! The DF stuff looks incredible, but it takes a l-o-n-g time to set up... We had limited tabletop space, so I had to set things up, play it out, then de-construct that area, to set up the next area. What a hoot! We did a combination of "theater of the mind", and full-blown miniature gaming, but everyone had a good time with it. Sorry, no photo's. Looking forward to future sessions with the 2.5D/3D concept. Cheers!
