I actually did this to my players once... it was funny how much time and effort they used to pass thru it.
i had this room... very long room ! like 100 feet by like 40 feet. the floor was pitch black at the exception of a small ledge that followed around the hole in the ground. charcaters arrived at one point and had to go all the way around with balance checks. to the other side. one of my players, a druid, actually camped till the next morning with his rhino. decided to boost with every spells he had on his rhino, take the running start and jump to the other side. as incredible as it seemed. he actually suceeded in jumping the impossible DC 40... basically punching all of his spells for that single jump. the others let the rogue travel the balance checks first. he was all safe ont he other side. another player travelled, almost fell. but it was fine...
last one fell down the hole halfway thru... he disappeared into the darkness below... literally... the floor was just 5 feet down with a permanent darkness spell hidding it !!!

Hahaha. What an amazing way to mess with the players. Great story.

I didn't see this post until it just got bumped, but that is a really good idea. Nice work with the fake pit trick! Maybe a zone of silence in there too so that they can't calculate distance by dropping a coin or something.

That's what they get for not taking the two seconds to drop something down to see how deep it goes or shining some light down to see further down, that should have been the tip off for them. Nice trap, this is going into my mental bag of tricks.

this one is brilliant DnDPaladin! I would have loved to see their faces when they figured that one out! You can be sure it'll be used in one of my game!

Nice trap, this is going into my mental bag of tricks. Of course the builders of this trap could have added a permanent silence spell to avoid that strategy. I'll use that scenario asap.

after i had run this trap on my party. i figured there was one thing missing in the trap... an inescapable way of making them fall.
like a part of the wall that slides and push them toward the hole. or making the balance checks until half way thru where they slip up the surface cause of a slick invisible substance. whatever you can think of, but you definitely need a way to push the charcaters into the hole.

I am going to place a door down below that leads to the areas they need to go to finish the adventure to completion and add a trap or two at the door and beyond. Befuddlement is kinda funny when you have players that think they have over-turned every stone and slap their foreheads when they "fall" into the pit and find an "area" unexplored. A little cruel, but these are aspects I love as a player...

DnDPaladin... Nice... You could have had the edges be living rock and always moving.

or i could as well put a monster down there that uses blindsight to find its prey. there are tons of possibilities here.

This is a great idea for letting the game run on for a couple hours while you plan for the next trick. I like it

Absolutely LOVE this idea.
Im going to have to steal this with my own evil set of twists:
Along with the ledge (which will probably be a narrow walk way straight across the room from 1 door to the next)..
There will be obviously "easier" but "Self destructive" means to cross the room.
Maybe a series of vines across the ceiling adorned with thorns, dealing damage as they cross (Which may or may not be poisonous).
The "easier" it is to cross, the more destructive to yourself it will be.
And everything will of course have checks that COULD result in someone falling anyways.
Mwahahaa
HAHAHAHAHAAAA..hahaha.hah.
Its great being the DM.
