The balsa wood was 1/4" square. It was just what I had laying around at the time. I probably wouldn't use balsa wood again, just because it is so fragile. I would just pick up some 1/4" square dowels from the hardware store.

I would just pick up some 1/4" square dowels from the hardware store. One thing I don't like about Home Depot, Lowe's etc, is that they have no coupons. e.g. I paid like $4.29 for some e6000 from Home Depot .. I was even thinking when I bought that I shouldn't because they have no coupons. Well yesterday when I was at Joann's to get some sculpey I saw that same tube of e6000 sittting on the shelf for like $4.99. But they have 40 to 50% off coupons every day and I could of gotten for like $3 or less. I wonder if the 1/4" wood dowel w/ coupon are cheaper at the craft stores than the hardware store. Michael's, Joann's and Hobby Lobby are all relatively close together so what I do is print off all 3 coupons at home before I take the trip to all three. I just buy 1 or 2 items at each store using the coupon each time saves a lot of money!

The JoAnn's near me only carries balsa wood. Michael's carries bass wood, but they don't seem to re-stock it very often, so it's chance if they have what I want. HobbyTown [different store from Hobby Lobby] carries both balsa and bass wood and I was able to get the 1/4 x 1/4 sticks there a couple of weeks ago

A 3' long 1/4" x 1/4" dowel is less than a dollar at Home Depot. You would need two of them, and that would leave you with some extra when you are done.
