Shaped the 'joints' with twisted (low temp) hotglue... ...and a small piece of electrical isolation cable added for the stumps of the arms:

Another project finished that sat in hibernation and cluttered up my desk for months! I started these two days before xmas ( last xmas, to be exact) and stopped ad the eyes, because I can't do eyes. I didn't want to ruin the pair (which reminds me of these two), and so I set out to learn how to paint eyes ....then got distracted by various other projects. Yesterday, Scotty revealed a neat trick for soulless, milky eyes: Just paint them with pearlescent and nothing else. Simple as that! Long story short, here are a few WIP pics, plus the finished Ropers. The rough shape is cut out of styrofoam, then smeared with structure paste (you can take rough sand, mixed with glue and acrylics). Don't forget to glue some metal scraps in where you want the magnetized tentacles later. [how to make tentacles: here and earlier postings] A bit of hotglue texturing and some pebble teeth glued in: ...looking already good with the tentacles! Base colors I absolutely love the stupid look of the smaller one! Washing the mouths I didn't document the following steps, but it's simple some drybrushings and washings. Nothing to write home about. Here's the finished pair. Sir Gneld of the Four Scales was so tired that he made his rest between two mighty stalagmites. At least that would shield him from two sides... What an epic mistake! The tentacles are basepainted black, then washed with metallic black. The ones on the larger Roper got an additional washing of deep purple to give them a magic 'glow' (which is hard to see on the pictures). Since they are all magnetized, I can use them on other monsters or as spellmarkers for spells like Edwards Black Tentacles.

The Ropers look great. Since the tentacles are magnetic, you can have them attack characters before the roper is revealed. Just add them to a plain base. It's an idea AJ talked about in his Roper video.
So what is the monster with all the tentacles and the make-up remover pad? I'm dying to know.

It's an idea AJ talked about in his Roper video. Jep, that's possible. I can add them to al sorts of monsters, or let them attack on their own. I'm thinking about making a low hill version of a roper, with the mouth going straight down. So what is the monster with all the tentacles and the make-up remover pad? I'm dying to know. Something that made it's initial appearance in the original Fiend Folio...

My guess would be a flumpf. And I am not sure about the spelling. A floating pancake with tentacles.

You're totally right! ...I thought Inhad to wait for days to continue posting, until someone makes that guess...) I had some free time after lunch and assembled them Behold The Terrible Tentacled Trio! Scrap metal glued in the center to be used with magnetized fly stands As long as the hotglue hasn't cooledm the main challenge is to keep the tentacles in the position you want them to have. Prepare and have lots of things at hand to use as tentacle support. Or, if you have more patience than me, make only one tentacle at a time... It helps to work with low temperatures, so pull the plug on your gluegun early. Lady Forscale watches the making of a Flumph: The very first Flumph! I decided against adding extra beads or other stuff for the eyes. Looks good enough as is, imho. A little while later, it got two siblings: Not sure how to paint them... I'll probably use the pathfinder color scheme. Freakin' sweet! That looks awesome! I have to get this tentacle maker going. I also really like the look of the flumphs up-side down. It looks like a mini sarlacc pit. Lots of potential there too.
I think Lady Forscale is genius!

Lady Forscale wasn't my idea. I stole it from Reaper's Bones Kickstarter project.

I killed my first Flupmh. With a bad paint job. Question to all who are better with painting then me (which is basically everyone) - what would you do to save this guy? I'm open for all kinds of color schemes, not only the official ones!

Big Attitude Ridden Rocks lol, that's a good one! What I had long overlooked is tha tfact that ropers are quite intelligent - philosophical even. That open up a whole lot of options for the DM! Not only can you reason with them instead of fighting*, you could even ally with them. * but really... a non-fighting encounter with a roper? Better have the reasoning accur when the party is in dire straits because the roper(s) threaten to win the day!Imagine an Underdark campaign where the party (surface races, for the most part) establishes a base that's guarded by a roper! That guy can even serve as mentor, giving advice and handing out regional and historic lore that dirves the plot. Of course, being an abberation, it can be trusted only so far, so the players won't mistake the roper for being the DM's mouthpiece. At least not after they fall for some intrigues of the roper. Might take several lessons until they get it, but that depends on how good your players are...

I mixed clear acrylic gloss varnish with a bit of beige, resulting in a thick, slimy-looking goo. Shot taken right after putting the goo on: After two dried applications, it doesn't look nice (or good), but at least nearer to the original than before: The other two will definitely get a totally different treatment. Which one, I don't know yet.

Flumph No. Two will be painted along the lines of this beauty (A Mid-Nor Cthonian Larvae from the Confrontation line), i.e. several shades of purple. I start with the deepest purple I have. I'll probably have to do two layers of basepainting, as in some places the greenstuff is shimmering through. Lets see how it looks after the color has dried...

you are way too fast in doing stuff... the first floumph i would of said, rebase and repaint entirely. but now...i must agree, not your best work there. can't wait to see the others.

I really, really like the purple Flupmh. It's got an Erol Otis thing going on, which is the highest compliment I can think of for an old school monster.

Erol Otis? Wow... thanks for the praise! Quick update: I did a drybrushing with Hormagaunt Purple and painted the mouths / air outlets / in the Flumph's rim with Primary Magenta. Waiting for it to completely dry, then some lighter shade of purple and finally some white highlights (probably). The LED flash distorts the colors quite a bit - it's a good deal darker than on the pictures.

If the motor boat Folk around here keep at it, I know someday soon there will be Thingies like that hovering over the fetid waters of The Creek. Be that as it may the Purple People Eater looks WONDERFULLY BIZARRE...bizarre gets extra points with moi. AND purple is an OUTSTANDING color for the Whatever. GREAT WORK once more!
Did you notice that the Oh-So-Cool Confrontation Beasty's tentacle ended in a hand? Now THAT has some possibilities.
