I have two games that I would like to highly recommend. I am fairly new to both, but they are straightforward and simple to learn and both have very interesting things about them! Rivers & Lakes - a fast-paced game based off of wuxia movies, with a heavily narrative-encouraged combat system that is highly reactive. While this game is made to play out all of your wildest kung-fu dreams, it certainly can be adopted/altered for other settings. Risus - the Latin word for "laughter", this game definitely has the potential to be incredibly hilarious. Although, that isn't a necessity. It is, however, incredibly open-ended and very flexible. Heck, the rulebook is only 4 pages long!

Can I throw in another plug for Basic Fantasy RPG? I ran B/X for many years, but have switched over the BFRPG for my current campaign. You get all the race/class options of other editions of D&D, ascending armor class (which is much easier), a nice 20 level progression, and B/X's simplicity.
AND IT IS TOTALLY FREE. And very well supported.
Choose what you like, but BFRPG is now my fantasy game to GM period.

I'm a big GURPS fan so GURPS Lite, don't let the rumors throw you. You do not need to know calculus to make a character .... System wise it can be as simple as 3d6 against a stat or as complex as using a ton of optional rules. Even with the free lite version you can use a ton of the different stuff out there that is player made.
